I have internalized everything everyone has said about me, I remember both the positive and the negative, and it's my own mistake for letting other people influence my actions in that way.. |

Strange, I'm glad you took that first step, its a big one, and I am so proud of you. Depression is very serious, and sometimes people can feel so bad, they just don't know how to cope with it. I hope you continue to talk to the right people, and if the pain doesn't go away, there are anti-depressants that can help to take away that hopeless feeling, and help you to better deal with your pain. And if you really talk to your parents, sooner or later they will listen. After all, they raised you, and care so much about you. Even if you don't think they listen sometimes. that's what parents do. Good luck!!

As it turned out my ex wife left me because I was too good for her, but it took the wisdome of hine site for me to realize it.
As I also said before when you relax, and take it light women will notice you. There are far, far more lonely women than there are lonely men, but the women are looking for A GOOD CATCH not a throw away man. When I tell people I'm a comic juggler/magician everybody thinks I'm nuts, but because I have chosen the path least traveled those people with a lunch box mentality always ask me "can you make money doing that". Try relaxing and see what happens.

For some reason, when a woman knows you are looking for a woman, they flee. When they get the vibe that you are NOT looking for a woman, those who are interested in you will send subtle signals (a smile with a little extra in the expression, talking about something you both could easily to together, or something like that). A woman will let you know if she is interested, but it can be subtle - you'll miss a few times on it, because it is not an exact science. If unsure, ask her to do something really safe that may not be thought of as a date. Meeting for lunch during a workday can make a woman feel safer about saying yes to an invitation, as you both have a limited time before you have to be somewhere. Perhaps invite a women to a group function that she can arrive and leave on her own.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Chessman understands that women chase men, and the older you get the more agressive women become. Lots of men think that they can smooth talk a women into bed, but those men are fools. I have dated many women since my divorce, and none of them were subtle. If a woman finds you attractive she will trip you, and be underneeth you before you hit the ground.

On the other side of this, I believe it is important for men (and woment)to watch their behaviors, and motives at magic conventions. (and outside) Remember that magicians that happen to be female are at conventions and meetings to learn and improve their magical arts. I thought about this while reading the article in the Linking Ring on Celeste Evans. Having talked to a few women at conventions, I have learned that not all men in attendance have the same motives when it comes to women in magic. Also please remember that we sometimes cover up a deeper motive that is not so pretty with one that looks better on the surface.
My wonderful wife and I connect on many levels. Her undergrad degree was in theatre. Connecting mentally, spiritually and emotionally first can lead to a more meaningful relationship. Addiction comes in many forms. One aspect of many addictions is immediate gratification..leading to long term pain. Another is filling up a spiritual hole with things like food, drugs or even sex. Heard an interesting comment about video game addiction this weekend. The person said they loved the fact that they could take on the role of the hero(or villian/criminal) and be able to change their look, strength and other abilities instantly...and of course the do-overs and cheat codes for extra health, money.... Every magic convention that I have ever been to there was at least a 100 to 1 ratio of men to women, so any body trying to score a date at a magic convention is lost in space. Women are best met by minding your own business, and letting the natural selection happen (natural selection is done EXCLUSIVELY by women, and men are their unsuspecting targets). Harris If you don't believe me ask your wife, because most men haven't a clue. LOL

Fish, sometimes it's better to let things out ,like you have done here...
Most if not all of us have traveled that lonely road where things don't seem to go right ,but some will not talk about it and let all the frustrations build till they snap. I have watched your videos that you have posted in the past ..When you showed us your vanish from "ponta the smith" dvd ..i thought wow you did it real justice (which in itself is not an easy move).Your coin magic is pretty good but you have to understand that not everybody is "into" what we love ! You will find people who love magic and will want you to show them your skills as a magician .. There is a lot of good advice above from many people ,even though we do not know each other on a personal level(unless you have met people on here) we are all behind you and I can understand why you posted on here! In a way I am glad that you have shared your thoughts because we can at least try to help ,a problem shared as they say . Try not to focus on bad points but focus on what you have achieved ,you have over come an addiction ,lost weight and become a coin magician that in it's self has took some real doing .. As for the so called friend who ripped you off ,well he was not really a friend and what goes around comes around my friend . I am glad that you did come on here and share your feelings than doing some think to your self.. We might only be on a computer but we do care ! Best Shaun
If you put the time in....you will achieve ...

I just wish I was more interested in magic at the moment. I'm interested in nothing very much, except my 3DS lately...even then, its obessive.
I need to read that book...it shouldn't be a chore, but I just have lost interest in everything still. |

Dear Strange, can I call you strange? LOL
I'm glad you checked in. I don't know what 3DS is. It may be that you are open to a change in the kind of Magic you would like to pursue. There are many kinds of Magic. If you look for a way to help someone else you will be surprised by how it helps you. It doesn't have to be a big deal. The smallest gesture can brighten someone else's day. Take a walk outside. Good Luck, we are thinking about you. Keep in touch. -Mary Mowder |

I was only talking about unmarried women. Married women are complacent, because they have a man.

Al, could I tell YOU a few things! Ha! My last four girlfriends were married. The last three were it, I swore off married women for good...then I met Stephanie...(groan). I guess I'll never learn.
We can talk therapy all we like. We can talk about doing this, doing that until we are blue in the face. The man needs friends. Good friends. Patient friends. Hard to find today. I am recovering from a devastating setback. For almost a year, I was homeless. I left Florida and moved to Maine. I know NO ONE up here. So you can imagine the depression...I came close a couple of times to...well, you know. I hung in there, and I have a new apartment, and a lifetime pension now! Everything is back on track. Having no friends, no one to talk to, no one to tell you you are OK, the world is screwed up, etc. (you know what I mean), this causes the person to feel isolated and alone. Being around familiar faces and people you know has a very calming effect. Some of us don't have that luxury. Up here in Maine, as I said, I know no one. So STFS, if you have friends around you, people and family you know, you are already ahead! I'm just glad you came here. I got a boost myself, from reading this topic. The Magic Café has been my therapy. I can see that is true for you, too STFS! Yes, we do have friends here, who care a great deal about us and our lives. Sometimes it just takes reaching out. The "magic" in the Café is real. Don't lose it, or let it go! The magic is HERE! Hope you're doing good, STFS! Doug |

I'm trying to do well. I feel like I'm not doing enough with my life, and not taking action as much as I should. Reading this thread helps me..
When I was at IMX, ponta's translator for subtitles on his DVD's brought this up. I told ponta on youtube before IMX that I was depressed. He explained this to the translator, and the translator said "Why you are depressed, because you can't be Ponta?". This really upset me. Then he turned to the waitress and said, "He's depressed. Can you help him?" which was embarassing.I began to question my own worth. Was I really trying to BE ponta? By trying to get as smooth as him? I just wanted to be as skilled as him. It still bothers me. When he said this, I tried to just laugh like it was funny, but it wasn't. Truth or not it bothers me. We were having dinner at a great authentic japanese restaurant in las vegas, with Akira Fuji, Ponta, and others. I can't remember everyone that was there. I hope I regain more interest in studying this magic book...I just don't feel like practicing, I enjoy performing, but it still feels lacking. I've been going to a community center and sociliazing 8 hours a day..riding my bicycle there 7.5 miles (in the 100+ degree heat, yikes!) one way..I really want to get better. I'm beginning to wonder if magic is my thing, or that I really enjoy it, or even if I've been doing it for others and not myself. I found this quote: "“Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working.”" I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, but I showed ponta's vnaish to Chris Kenner. He said it was f'ing smooth, or smooth as hell, I don't remember which. But it made me feel proud. I need to work on my presentation now to better connect with audiences, to make a more lasting impression rather than tricks just done by 'sleight of hand'. I did get my food handlers card renewed, so I can find a job at a restaurant doing tables. (bussing or as a waiter) |

I'm sure Ponta and the translator did not wish to offend. People just have no idea what to say if you tell them you're depressed.
We're all pulling for you Fish and especially so because you are in there pitching and trying to get better. Sometimes you need a break from practice till you see something that excites you. I know not much seems exciting now but relax, it will come. I have a loved one who is suffering from depression and I know it isn't easy. Just know that there are people who care more than you can imagine. You are important to their world. You need never question your worth. We are all a part of creation, granted a small part, but I'm just happy to be on the bill. Sentience is only granted to a small portion of matter as far as we know. You have to be glad to be a part of that club. -Mary Mowder |

I just feel like a poser, a fake, someone who manipulates others to get what he wants...
I don't want to be this way. Other people have told me I'm not .One person I lived with telled me I was, and that he wasn't going to "play my game." I still remember what he said to me. But I can't help showing interest in other people, and I'm afraid I'm doing it for the wrong reasons, selfish reasons. There has to be a mutual benefit.. |
