How's your double lift?
I suggest you purchase some classic books. What are you finding yourself to be mainly interested in? What type of magic?
Who is John Galt?

I would usually need to misdirect my audience before a double-lift.
I usually do a riffle count and a thumb break...not very smooth though...sometimes I need my other hand to come over to check if I've really got only two cards. I'm unable to lift two cards just like that. *snap* As for the type of magic I'm interested in...I like magic that happens in the hands of the spectator. So I guess I'm into close-up magic...or street...or impromptu...or magic that can be done with just about anything around you. Hope you know what I mean...lol! |

I'm with financedragon on this one (although I do appreciate your choice of The Xpert among your upcoming purchases).
No matter what tricks constitute your "arsenal," books can teach you the skills to deploy them wisely. Plus, books are easily the best value in magic: as an example, The Mark Wilson Complete Course In Magic contains over 300 effects, for about $20. Under 7 cents per effect? Not bad at all. Best of luck, Neil

I agree with Neil, the Mark Wilson book is just fantastic.
Get a really good set of books, like the Art of Astonishment, there you will find all sorts of close up magic you can imagine by the genius that is Paul Harris. Alot of his magic is unique and there are those effects which happen in the hands of the spectator. With regards to your list, I would say, you should expand your knowledge of the TT. Try getting a bill switch video, I heard Money Morph was good. I mean, it makes sense since you already have a TT right? Plus you can link it with your Stealth Pen. The Xpert is great so that's one definite item you should get (ok Neil, you have my Paypal address, I'm waiting for the $$$ ) Good luck and practice my friend! Take care, Logan

Absolutely! Books, and videos are what you should be investing in first. I still use Mark Wilson's book as a source of information. DVDs are the best things to ever hit magic instruction.

I too agree. You have way to many tricks, and not enough books. Tricks are great, but what have you REALLY learned? A hand full of tricks. I recommend the Card College series, Royal Road To Card Magic, Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic by Martin Gardner, All of the books in the Self-Working Series, 13 Steps to Mentalism, and Close-Up Card Magic by Harry Lorraine among others.

Card College by Giobbi and Royal Road by Braue and Hugard are the place you need to start for cards as dpe666 has stated.
I would still get On The Spot by Wilson.

I would also reccomend purchasing "Now You See It, Now You Don't" by Bill Tarr. This book helped me tremendously with my sleight-of-hand when I was starting out.Once you' ve worked through that, there is the second volume of Now You See It, Now you Don't by Tarr.

Wow...
Thank you so much everyone! Didn't expect that I'll get such a big response. I think I've kinda decided. I'll be getting... Royal Road To Card Magic Card College Series The Mark Wilson Complete Course In Magic Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic by Martin Gardner Close-up Card Magic by Haryy Lorraine Now You See It, Now You Don't (Vol. 1 & 2) ...in addition to my purchse list above. Don't think I'm getting the Art of Astonishments series at the moment because I heard they are for more intermediate magicians. Well, I'm gonna be broke for quite a while...quite a LOOONG while in fact... Anyway, I've got some questions: Logan, you mentioned getting a bill switch video. Do you know of where I can see a demo for one? This is the first time I've heard of it. Do let me in on more details. Thanks a million! dpe666, what are "All of the books in Self-Working Series"? What are the titles of the books? Thanks once again for all the replies! -Silvester- P.S. Neil, I'm really excited about getting your effect...everyone's saying it's really good! |

Welcome to the great hobby. I must agree with the above posters ny saying that videos and books are the way to go for a while. This all comes down to the structure of learning magic. I, personally, would be a better magician if I would have took the time to read some books in the first place. Now I have loads of unused gimmicks and huge gaps in some of the basic sleight of hand.
Some effects are also best when the performer has gained a good self confidence and the patterns are usually better when you have done magic for a while, and of course read a lot about magic in general. I couls say, without knowing you, that you are not quite ready for the effects such as Healed & Sealed, loops, and perhaps Xpert. But nonetheless they are great effects and you will enjoy them but just don't perform them until you're read. I have numerous tricks I cannot perform because I didn't have the patience when I was younger. The Off the Spot vdeo is great and I recommend you to by it. Also check Bill Tarr's book as state, it is excellet. And Pen thru' anything and Raven are very good tricks for beginners. And don't worry, it won't take that long to be ready for almost any effect on the market. |
