Or at least their reputation from his point of view.

Carrie, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.

Life is wonderful enough? Flick the channels on TV and see how many good news stories’ there are compared to bad. How much suffering the naturel disasters of the world have inflicted on countries such as China, New Zealand, USA and Australia, or maybe look at the latest casualty figures of western forces coming out of Afghanistan. I’m not sure what world your living in ViolinKing, but as far as I can see it, the world needs as much wonder it can get at the present time, and as magicians we are in a position to do so, even if it’s only for a short while.
What we do my not bring the same prestige as a lawyer or Doctor, but I don’t think in anyway are we less NOBLE then those of other professions. What could be less noble then to bring a smile to someone’s face? Magically Aus |

@Aus.
Hmm... what are you after? They told me there would be trolls, but I can't honestly believe that someone on the web would just negate negate negate and not realize it. All you've done is negate. You KNOW I can't just capitulate to you. What good does it do anyone to say the world isn't wonderful? What good does it do to list the world's woes? Now look, we aren't going to get anywhere if we continue debating. Please tell me about yourself. I am not in a position to judge, and if I can learn from you, and better myself, I would enjoy that. So lets just scratch everything I've written and start over. You see, if I seem young and foolish, its because I honestly DON'T KNOW if its wrong to be flippant, but I honestly don't want to take magic too seriously because I feel like people need to relax more than they need to worry. That's what I try to bring to my magic, when I perform, and to my life, everyday. Like I said, I don't see the value of listing the world's woes. I can't change those things, but I can have a sense of humor about them. And having a sense of humor won't obscure people's thinking, but it will take their minds off of their problems. Which is what I thought The Magic Café would be about... just as magic is the thing to take people's minds off of their worries, I thought the Magic Café would be a place where people would want to take people's minds off of their worries. I mean come on, this is basic level suggestion and hypnosis. You're not going to stop worrying about something by focusing on it and dwelling on it. If you stand in front of your audience, and deep in your mind is hidden worries which include, Natural disasters? Mass Casualties of War? Your audience is going to pick up on it. You are literally suggesting those things to them by presenting them with what you consider a balm for those ailments, (the balm, in this scenario, is the affected sentimentality of someone like Doug Henning.) So for Christ's sake, have a sense of humor. And I resent the notion that I even COULD live in a world different from yours. |

This post started out quite simple. It now seem to have changed which interest me a lot. it seem ther are two camps of thought.
Camp 1- Believes that magic should be a experience. May be a story and something happy that links the viewer emotionally. And there lies the entertament. Camp2- Seems to say that magic is just a quick trick, leave them guessing how you did it. And its them thinking how you did it and the puzzle of it all is where the entertament lies. These are what I think are the lines of thought are. Also these are not defections of what the word entertament means. I want to get it clear of what’s going on. Because I feel I am in camp one. I don’t want to over look camp 2. I just want to get it formed to see if it has a place in my magic. (ViolinKing I notice you say for Christ sake. Are you a Follow of Christ)
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Ok ViolinKing I’ll put all my cards on the table. I’ve been in magic close to 20 years and have been an avid student ever since. I’ve come to learn early on why people consider this an art form because magic in its many complexity is anything but “simple tricks and nonsense” (if I missed the jest in the star wars analogy I apologise).

David’s sentimentality as strained and affected as you perceive it to be is just one aspect that helps in this wonder you say we don’t need. If we are to suspend belief, wonder needs to be part of the mix, and it’s this exclusion aspect that you have in regards to this I disagree entirely with. In light of current events of the like I’ve just mentioned, the world doesn’t have enough wonder in it my view, but rather desperately needs more, or at least dually reminding. That is the purpose of wonder in our magic, that despite these things going on in our world, it is still a wonderful place. You asked to know more about me, so here are some of my other views to magic that I have posted in my time here. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=41 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=41 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=41 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=41&53 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=41 Magically Aus |

When I first started in magic, I did "simple tricks and nonsense", and presented a series of puzzles that left people trying to figure out how I did what I did.
Now, as I've matured (? hopefully) in my approach to what I do, I do indeed want to try and create a sense of wonder, entertaining folks, hoping they suspend belief, and just for awhile, provide an escape. I guess this all depends on your philosophical viewpoint of what you do. I sold paint for several months. Some thought of this as just "slinging paint". To me, I was helping someone transform the appearance of their home, and actually, in perhaps a small way, enhancing their life. I'm afraid it sounds like you've already lost the "wonder" of the profession... |

You know, Violin King, when I first found out at age 30 that I had a 3 1/2 inch mass in my chest that turned out to be Hodgekin's Disease I felt as if life had come to an end with an intense cloud overcoming my thoughts and emotions. I had 2 shows booked that weekend, and I did them only because I had promised to do so. But during those moments, as I led the Renaissance Parade as Merlin with those kids hanging on me, I had suspended my own disbelief. I was in the moment. I had completely forgotten about my own troubles and focused on sharing my passion with my new friends. It was real magic, for me too. And later, in the cancer ward doing a simple trick for a young bald boy caused him to smile for a moment and forget that his life also was hanging on a thread.
Everyone died from Hodgekin's disease in the 1950s. There was no cure not too long ago. 100% fatal after about 18 months. It is truly a miracle that I'm still breathing in the 21st century. So magic remains a staple in my life, 21 years later. As does the cello, which I first played as a child, Violin King. So you can think its all simple tricks and nonsense, and that your special skills stump spectators sometimes. Or you can realize what a short miracle this journey is on this whirling ball in space and use the opportunity to do something for someone (and for yourself) that inspires others to enjoy and find meaning in their lives. The choice is yours. :magicrabbit: |
