OK, I've looked around but I must not be looking in the right places.

I am trying to find a steel shim US penny that will be attracted to a magnet. I've found magnetic pennies, but I need a US penny (with a newer date- I have ones that are wheat pennies and they just look suspicious...)that stick to a magnet.

I'm also loooking for a nickle & dime scotch & soda. This can be magnetic or standard pressure fit type.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

For nickel/dime set, also called the 6 cent trick, to the following site (Mimesis magic):

http://www.mimesis-magic.com/page/page/1929982.htm

The also sell the bang ring for this set.

Isn't it in your regular magic shop?

If I had one, I'd check! Our town doesn't really have a brick & mrotar magic shop. There's one about 40 miles away, but they didn't have anything like this and offerred no help finding what I needed either. So I ran some internet searches without much luck.
So it occured to me that The Café' is the place to ask! There's lots of folks who have been quite helpful regarding questions of this nature.

For shimmed penny sh**l:

For regular shimmed penny (you don't see these very often other than the copper plated 1943 pennies) you could call Chuck Leach at Chazpro (really nice guy and works a lot with PK) or you could try here:

Hope that helps.

Alan,
Thanks for the information. This may explain why I'm having no luck with the pennies, plus the wheat pennies I have are...1943!
I'm thinking of just using a penny-dime set and permanently sticking them together. They sound a bit "weak" when rattled in a glass, but perhaps for most situations no one will notice anything. But they will stick to a magnet which is the ultimate goal with what I'm trying to do.

Now for a penny-nickle scotch & soda...

Sorry, in my response I said nickel/dime and I meant nickel/penny. Go the Mimesis Magick link and it will take you to a nickel/penny scotch and soda type set.

US govt switched to steel pennies during WWII, that's why the magnetic copper plated pennies are all of those dates (early 40's).

I really do suggest that you talk to Chuck (or Barbara who has worked there for 20+ years) at Chazpro. If anyone knows a good place to find a few steel shimmed pennies, he would because he works with magnetics so much (he makes the bat and raven). He also makes an excellent steel shimmed and magnetic quarter. He is also one of the nicest guys you will ever talk to (Barbara is great too!).

I have never shopped at Thurstons, but if you go down the list, look for steel shimmed coins and below that it says you can get 6 steel Shim Pennies for $4.98. That gives you an idea of what it may cost. Given the low cost to buy a ready made shim coin, making your own doesn't seem like the right direction to go. First, it might come apart at the wrong time (if you use superglue). Second, the shim is likely to make the fit slightly off (in addition to the funny sound you were referring to). Also, you are ruining a perfectly good gaff.

Dime and Penny tricks are not just for kids! Ask Dave Neighbors - he has a great published routine with the set (he probably has more than one, knowing Dave).

Regards,

Alan

Alan,
Good advice- you're right, for a little $$ I may have a better solution and risk next to nothing.

I will also contact Chazpro and see what advice or help they may have.

I picked up Dave Neighbors' Okito Box book a few years ago- excellent material, so it doesn't surprise me he's done something with what everyone writes off as too simple (dime/penny trick).

Kelvin,

My old eyes read it the way you intended it to be, not the way you wrote it.

Actually, your mis-type sounds kind of interesting - a nickel/dime - if it was magnetic it would be a teeny tiny coin unique!

You can also try contacting Roy Kueppers. He regularly makes modern-date steel shim pennies, as well as the 6 Cent Trick set. He can also make the type of Scotch & Soda you desire. Go to http://www.roykueppers.com and look up his phone number. He is a very good guy and will work with you to make what you need.
