I have a problem with my one handed fans. When Im going to produce a fan the fan is more like a bar of cards and some times there are more cards at the bottom of the fan and few cards at the top.

If you a producing from a normal palm grip the sides with your index and pinky. Put your thumb under the packet at the inner lower part. Push up untill the cards are vertical, then push your thumb upwards and pull down with your fingers. It's a knacky thing.

DJ explained it pretty well and that is what I do as well. Also, it is important that you use the right kind of cards for fanning. Often times new bicycle cards work really well for fanning. But, neilson cards and manipulator cards do not. These need to first be prepared with fanning powder for them to fan well. Give it a try and you will develop a touch for it.

Bikes fan well for about a few weeks and then they get rough so you have to buy a new one, or you can just buy fanning powder.

I know that a new deck is very easy to fan, but when I'm going to do productions and so on I have to prepare the cards so they become softer. Then it becomes pretty much like an old deck.
The fans are getting better but my new problem is that the fan is not even.

Some say fanning powder helps the cards fan smoothly, but I personally think it is just a marketing scam

I'm not a fan of fanning powder. No pun intended.

Tor, you could try fanning powder - I simply stated my opinion on fanning powder, you may be one of the few who actually use it and like it. Who knows until you try?

I have not had any success with fanning powder so I just don't use it.

Here is a solution to the problem which has worked very well for me. I know that certain moves in my card act requires newer cards to work better. These are moves like card scaling and snap productions.
I also know that some moves I need worked in cards as well. these would be for my perfect productions, back palms and front to back moves. With this in mind, I just put the appropriate cards into card clips and then just make body steals for when I need the ceratin card stacks. It is an easy soultuion and works great for me. If I use all the same card brands, then the audience never sees a difference and it looks fluid. Give it a try.

Tor:
That is great to hear. Just keep practicing with it and with different types of cards. Also, video tape your practices as it is the best way to really see what you are doing right or wrong. Then you can make the corrections before the wrong ways become habit.

I also like card scaling. It is really fun to see how far you can throw a card. Do you know where I could get Ricky Jay's Cards as Weapons cheap?

Check out magicauction.com or at a magic convention near you. I also enjoy card scaling and have several techniques I use myself.

Cards as Weapons is still such a sought after book amoung magicians. It's not a problem getting a copy, it's getting a reasonably priced copy that is the problem!
If you want to pay $375+ for it - sure it's actually quite easy to get a hold of. I haven't seen the material in this book, but I can imagine it is very useful. Just keep practising whatever technique you are using. Kevin |

Jeff McBride talks about this same thing in his videos. I found fanning powder gives the cards a managable finish. Also use cards that hold the powder well like bikes.
