A friend of mine has asked me if id do some walk around at his sisters Karaoke bar at a snow resort in exchange for a free weeks accomidation.Good deal I'm thinking.Ive performed before a few times at weddings and coctail parties.I only do simple stuff, card tricks, TT.sponge..generally enough to keep everyone amused. However, the crowed will be Chinese tourists with only a little English and I'm thinking it will be hard to communicate.Just looking for some advise really, will my magic be enough to get through?
Thanks,xie xie, David. |

You might want to look up Shoot Ogawa and Apollo Robins Cultural Xchange DVDs, I found them very useful. I believe Jay Sankey also have a DVD that attempts to cross the language barrier, called International.
Much of your existing material will probably convert into a presentation using gestures and facial expressions instead of words. I had good success performing 30 minutes of card magic for an Italian family without having a common language. I let the Cultural Xchange DVDs inspire me, by watching the various ways of conveying different meaning. Dare I say it? I believe my normally worded magic got better from that experience too! Obviously you could look into miming etc, but for me that was overkill. Some say that 60% of what we communicate is already non-verbal. With a week to experiment, you will probably be amazed how much you can "say" without words Michael |

I perform during my business trips to Mainland China when I am there twice a year. First, you will be surprised by the number of people who speak some English. But it is best to be prepared that they will speak no English. Think of very visual effects and view them as the spectator might. You can always show them to friends at home but speak no words and see if they understand. I have really enjoyed performing in China and believe magic transcends culture. Good Luck and have fun.

Coin magic is generally a good language-crossing area. Also, things like the Ambitious Card (when done right) can be very effective with the language barrier.
