Et al.
Has anyone heard of or seen counterfeit Tenyo? I can't recall where I heard this, but I heard there have been counterfeits. Is this true? Are these the knockoffs (from certain sites that steal Stereo's photos for example) we've all seen or discriminating examples that would fool most if not all of us? If the latter, I think it would be great to start a project identifying fakes for public knowledge. This has been done for every other popular collectible, why not Tenyo? |

I have seen a blatant chinese knock off of crystal cleaver. It is in a very 'Tenyoesque' box with a picture of the actual cleaver on the back..though it says..'product will vary.' The back of the box is emblazoned with big 'made in China' sticker..it was selling for about $7

From what I know (I own or once owned them) there are knock offs of
- Crystal Cleaver - mine broke after a few uses, - Mini Morphosis - reasonable quality, but by far not as reliable as the genuine version - Floating Rock - the 'floating' mechanism doesn't work - Puzzling Queen - reasonable quality - Impossible Pen - reasonable quality - Funnel Vision - unreliable, coins get stuck - Trisector - mine broke after a few uses - Krazy Keys - reasonable quality - Eye Of The Idle - the m****** are unreliable - Invisible Zone - reasonable quality - Future Clock - makes a terrible rattling noise when you use the gimmick - Oh No! - the mirror is terrible They were all produced in China and I bought them several years ago at a magicshop in Holland for cheap prices not for the trick itself, but I wanted to know the secret With 'reasonable quality' I mean the trick works (sometimes) but the materials used aren't comaparable to Tenyo's versions of course. I know there are other cheap versions for example from Fantastica (sometimes for sale on Ebay for 10 - 15 USD). I don't know what quality they are. |

Good stuff.
We should keep this thread alive as we see things for historical documentation. Tom |

This is the one I "fell" for from Ebay seller Steenschmidt. It arrived damaged with a metal rod piece protruding...unworkable. Though the instructions title it "Magic Pyramid", the seller's ad called it "Crystal Pyramid". Thus it came up on a google search for Crystal Pyramid.
I returned it for refund, but since it had to ship overseas to Denmark I had to eat this. Stereo I don't have package or photo for this reason. |

Years ago I bought some tricks (from a well known magic German dealer) bearing names and pictures like this one from the original Tenyo tricks!!
Of course, they were absolute rubbish! When I returned them the seller was rude and didn't want to explain why I used pictures of Tenyo tricks to advertise those cheap Chinese fakes... Well, I've spent lots money for my magic hobby since - but this guy hasn't seen a single penny from me again!

Interesting.
I think a fakery/counterfeit section should be added to Stereo's blog. As the blog has pretty much become the definitive Tenyo reference on the web, this only serves to improve what's already illustrious! |

Add the two I just had the misfortune to try and make work:
"Confined Cubes" and "Money Splash" |

The question is are these knock offs, meaning stealing the idea and design but calling it something slightly different or with different packaging?
Or are these literally counterfeit items that say Tenyo and are sold as Tenyo while being cheap rip offs? I have seen many knock offs that are clearly not Tenyo or sold as Tenyo though they steal the idea. I have not seen fakes sold as originals. |
