This has the potential to come across kind of "jerk-ish" and I promise it's not meant that way. It's hard to convey tone through text.

This is an honest to goodness question.

When it comes to brochures, most of the advice seems to be "FOR HEAVENS SAKE DON'T FIRE UP MICROSOFT OFFICE! HIRE A PRO!"

When it comes to websites, most of the advice I hear is "DESIGN IS CRITICAL! HIRE SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS WHAT THEY'RE DOING!"

In general the theme is that if you need a professional service related to your marketing, and you're not an expert in the field, hire someone who is.

So why is it the general consensus with web video is "TURN ON YOUR CELL PHONE CAMERA, CRAP IT OUT, AND THROW IT ON YOUTUBE!"

Pretty much everyone has a similar variation of that. Steve Garfield, the king of online video freaking advocates that. I read his book.

What makes video different? How is it any less a representation of our professionalism?

GREAT Question… not 'jerk-ish' at all Mathew!

FIRST, I will totally agree with you that printed conversation, in a forum like this is excruciatingly limited on sooooo many levels for sure. (Missing some of the most valuable modalities for effective COMMUNICATION, is I understand and agree 1 Million percent!)

With that in mind; HERE are my limited (late-night) comments: (Hehehehe...)
Besides, This is a HUGE Subject… this forum (any forum) conversation could never really do it full justice.

There are several things: (More That we will ever cover...)
= There is a whole ‘DIY’ culture out here… (Good, Bad, Indifferent…) It is what it is! (Again, Great, Good, Bad and Otherwise.)

= As with any medium, the tally is measured in RESULTS. I am, and always will be an advocate of what has proven to WORK based on experienced results.

As a full professional talent buyer/producer for everything from Casinos, Cruise Ships, Corporate and Special Events… etc, (as well as seller/provider in the market.) understand that I have had and seen a huge array of marketing and promotional materials and collateral! (Again, G,B,U.)

some of which were ‘stunning’, Spielberg-like videos that are uber-cool, clever, funny, (what-ever) yet failed to deliver measurable or discernable results by way of bottom-line, profit barring, business building, sales and/or booking RESULTS!

AND then again, I have seen some powerful and effective home-made marketing (of what-ever medium) that generated massive money making outcomes! (And Visa-Versa, of course…) so it is difficult to pin-point from one buyer to the next what is supposed to be ‘good’.

Good, effective, profit producing RESULTS are the test of what really is of measurable business value and impact for most here.

Too, there is soooooo much one can do and use in the marketing and multi-media arena that there is always room for theses free gifts, tools, resources for the working, aspiring & emerging presenter to use in their over-all (Super Effective) marketing mix that it is perfectly acceptable to do some of the work on our own even if you get support in some other arenas… in part it’s about choice and opportunity.

VIDEO very specifically has the immeasurable potential to assist in the over-all marketing and relationship process outside of the more traditional video marketing as we used to know it…

Most of us, if any are not going to hire-out a full production crew and post production suite of experts to send out a personal video greeting from one person to another… - - The new age of video and media has far surpassed the television production video of yester-year by a loooong shot.

Like I said, it is a HUUUUUGE question and consideration and LOTS of ides, experiences and notions on ALL SIDES of the question are worth discussing for sure… I welcome it.

THIS post and the free gifts and tools I simply offered barely touch (let alone scratch) the surface of this much to hearty topic of conversation.

First, my sincere apologies for the type-o in your name from my last posting… I am truly sorry about that.

As far as video and the over-all marketing discussion is concerned, YES, video can come in all sorts of sizes, shapes and deliverable outcomes in our over-all marketing and business building mix.

“Relationships”, in my experience and opinion is one of the key focus considerations with ALL effective business and marketing outcomes, (Not Just Video.) so yeah, I am also talking about relationship building.

I am a huge fan of pros doing what pros do best… I am also a huge fan of producing RESULTS that Work to the mutual, win, win, win advantage basis with all parties involved. That is what you would do for people you are in a ‘relationship’ (Even a business relationship) with isn’t it?
