I ordered a pre-release copy from Felix to get his new e-book, Chance's Token.
Since I am interested in bizarre routines with Tarot cards, I was very excited. And I have not been disappointed! On 43 pages Felix describes in great detail and with quite some photos his routine. He uses known techniques which he has integrated smoothly into his routine, and thus has created something really new. It is a well thought out routine with a startling conclusion. Of course, it is not a routine that one reads and performs immediately after. But if you take you time to find and prepare the corresponding materials, you have a pearl of bizarre magic in your hands. I have very much joy with it! Best wishes from Italy. Herbert |

I posted this in the Spooky section, but I guess it's probably better to have posted it here so....
I have taken my time and gone through the CHANCE'S TOKEN e book a few times now. What I find to be a fantastic facet of this effect is it's fluidity and changeableness. Apart from the performers choice of what genre to play this in (choice of props, style of presentation) The "sitter" has so many choices that two performances one after the other could be completely different. How many areas of their life the sitter chooses to use What order are they laid out in front ot them How many cards they decide to use Which area they decide to focus on There is a lot of room for personalisation which is great And it's easy to do!!!!!!!!! The bizarre presentation has everything to keep an audience enthralled right to the end. A beautiful piece of theatre I'm going to have lots of fun sourcing props for this Congratulations on a winner Felix Regards steve |

It was an honor to receive a pre-release copy of Felix Schellenberg's (nick at the Café - Nicolino) new e-book Chance's Token.
The manuscript is very well written and each phase of the effect has been explained in great detail including the thinking gone behind each phase of the routine. Various known methods/ techniques have been cleverly integrated so as to create one complete mind-blowing routine. Each phase of the routine has an impossible outcome and as the routine progresses, the various outcomes become more and more startling for the laymen as well as the magicians alike. Although "Chance's Token" deals with every aspect of the effect in great detail, but let me warn you that this isn't a routine that can be performed right out of the box. It's a multistage multi-punch routine and hence one needs to give it adequate time, effort and preparation so as to workout ones performance steps in ones own style. After putting in the requisite pre-performance efforts, I performed it five times in a real world scenario and I am happy to say that this has got me great reactions. My efforts paid off. As I have already mentioned above, Felix has given out his thinking behind creating each stage/ phase of the routine and hence this will immensely help the THINKING magician. "Chance's Token" provides ample opportunity to create and personalize the routine and the props to ONES OWN performance style. "Chance’s Token" is an excellent take and a nice bizarre touch using Tarot Cards. I have liked "Chance’s Token" and I highly recommend it.

I just read through the ebook yesterday (thank you, Felix!) and I have to say: It's a really great effect! The method is easy yet deceptive and the storyline can be changed to fit every need!
I would really recommend it! Best regards, Zedd |

Thanks guys!!
I have recently used the effect with the PLF Picture Stack as well in a more formal environment and so I was thinking about creating prediction photo templates for the PLF, too. Before I do the work, however - do you have any preferences what images to use?

Felix, I echo the positive sentiments of the other reviewers. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your manuscript and will have fun personalizing it to the artifacts I can create around the storyline. I look forward to learning of subsequent effects you release!

Chance's Token: a short review ...
Let me begin by saying that I have a special fondness for effects that use Tarot cards. Tarot cards along with strong presentation can raise even the most pedestrian effect to new levels. But while this is true at least in my experience, the real strength in using Tarot cards lies in NOT using them in "card tricks." Felix (a.k.a. Nicolino here on the The Café) has created not only a fine piece of mentalism but a wonderful piece of theater with "Chance's Token." If you give this effect the proper attention in terms of presentation you will have not only a STRONG piece of mentalism. [N.B. Mentalists, some of you might consider this "mental magic" as opposed to mentalism. I do not wish to get into that debate so for purposes of this post, I will use the term mentalism]. So, who SHOULDN'T buy this effect? Such a strange question and perhaps Nicolino may be wondering why I would dissuade some people from buying it. However, I hope that my argument will prove to be sound and Nicolino will be pleased with my reasoning: This effect is NOT for those into XCM. If you would precede this effect with regualr cards and you have done all sorts of jugglery that would make even Michael Moschen put away his sphere and then try to do Chance's Token, you have diminished this effect and created a theatrical discontinuity that is simply bad theater in every sense of the word. This effect is NOT for "move monkeys." As an addendum to this, if you LOATHE effects that do not use sleight of hand, then stay away from Chance's Token. Go and read Ortiz's Strong Magic, THEN come back and learn Chance's Token after your paradigm has shifted. This last point is the most difficult to argue because it requires self-reflection each performer's part. Obviously our skills as performers must be at the very best for any effect, but effects such as Chance's Token fall into line with classics such as Pseudo Psychometry, OOTW, The Trick That Cannot Be Explained, in that you must convey CONVICTION in your demeanor regarding such an effect. No, I am not suggesting that there is no humor in this effect. Indeed you can have lots of humor with this, but remember, at its heart, the effect should not be presented in the comical way you would present The Ambitious Card for example. If you think of this as a card trick, you are doomed to fail. Okay, that out of the way I think my colleagues that it can be discerned who SHOULD buy this effect. As mentioned in earlier posts, this is not an effect you are going to do ten minutes after reading it. There is some considerable one time preparation for this gem. However, it is ONLY a one time prep and you will have an effect that will serve you well. Please do not skimp on the props? Take the time to find some beautifully illustrated Tarot cards. While the ever present Waite deck WOULD work, I would argue that this effect deserves the little bit of extra work in seeking out a Tarot deck that is out of the ordinary. The tokens in the effect represent different life values. Do as Christian Chelman would and haunt your antique shops and flea markets. Take the time and find genuinely OLD articles. Please do not "age" them? In addition to the main effect which I feel is MUCH stronger than the "lazy man's" version also included, you will find some great principles in this excellent piece of theater that you can apply to other effects. Great principles from such performers as Al Leech and Ted Lesley are intrinsic parts of the effect and invite further investigation. Nicolino has properly credited sources and in this day and age when crediting is a hotter issue than ever - or at least more widely discussed thanks to the digital medium in which we find ourselves - I applaud Nicolino for his attention to crediting. Personal matters have kept me from reviewing effects sent to me and so this review comes a little late. [N.B. I am seven reviews behind still and my DEEPEST apologies to Kyle, Cameron, Raphael, Chris, etc., for the delays]. The review copy I was sent however was well produced and although there are a few VERY minor grammatical errors due to the translation from German, these errors are not confusing. Steveline noted: "What I find to be a fantastic facet of this effect is it's fluidity and changeableness. Apart from the performers choice of what genre to play this in (choice of props, style of presentation) The "sitter" has so many choices that two performances one after the other could be completely different." I couldn't agree more. In fact I would add that the fluidity and changeable nature of this effect lends beautifully to that type of rare effect that can build your business. People are interested in themselves, the present, the future, and how each impacts and will impact them. This effect's strength lies in that primal notion. To conclude then, if you are a performer interested in an effect that can play close up to stage and anywhere in between and your focus is in presentation in the best Annemannesque sense, then Chance's Token is simply a must have addition to your arsenal. Even if you decide not to perform Chance's Token, the reasoning and structuring of the effect will give you food for thought for other effects you ARE doing and you pick up a few cool principles to boot. Felix, you have a winner here and I applaud you for releasing an effect that requires a sense of THEATER! WELL DONE!! Ahimsa, Vlad |
