I just had a cool experience. I tried busking at a new farmers market in my area. It's just getting started so it was really small. I didn't realize just how small it actually was. Not really enough traffic for me to make good money. The folks attending the market were nice and a large percentage dropped something in my hat but there just wasn't enough people to make it worthwhile.

I wasn't too disappointed because it was an experiment. Then as I was leaving one of the vendors waved me over and thanked me for coming and gave me a beautiful bunch of carrots. Then another vendor brought me a big bag of fresh peas and new potatoes, and someone else gave me a huge bag of assorted lettuce. Finally as I was walking to my car a little girl came running after me with a big bag romaine hearts. My wife estimated the value at about $25 to $30.

So even though I didn't do as well as would have liked it was really heart warming to see these people show their appreciation. They each made a comment about how nice it was to have me there and how it helped create a fun atmosphere for them. Not a financially rewarding Thursday evening but it was fruitful!

I've been trying to "Busk" at our Farmer's Market but haven't got there yet. I see them as a great "training" ground to polish your Busking skills!

Working for food is good experience. When the economy crumbles you will have a set of skills that will prove most handy.

Hey Sir Richard, actually a farmers market is no different than any other outdoor event. I've worked some really large ones and they have an important advantage over parks or other open public spaces: people are there to buy something and they're using CASH. Nobody uses a credit card or writes checks at a farmers market. All this cash business means lots of ones and fives in people's pockets and purses.

Also many farmers markets have musical entertainment so sometimes you can get them to pay you and you can also pass the hat. If you can find them on weekday evenings they can pretty good. Many of them are on Saturday morning and usually over before noon so you still have time to do other things in the afternoon and evening. You might even get a sponsorship from a vendor to draw people to their booth (and still pass the hat of course.)

The only thing you should to be mindful of is the large percentage of repeat customers every week. You can deal with that by finding 3 or 4 different ones and alternating weeks.

As far as "training" and "polishing" I wouldn't recommend a farmers market. The foot traffic can be moving pretty fast (kind of like a mall) so if you're not skilled at stopping people and holding them you'll have a tough time at a farmers market. People tend to move methodically from vendor to vendor. I try to stop a family with a kid(s) and build on that.

I would say a park or other spot where people are easily stopped or already stopped is a better training ground.

Well, 1st, I have permission from the fellow in charge to "Busk" there. Parks are out of the question at this time. We're a small town so people usually aren't in a hurry. However I've done some things in Club events which require me to stop people for a few minutes & I've been pretty successful. Our FM is on both Thursday & Saturday mornings from 7 to either noon or 1 pm...I don't remember which. Circumstances here on the home front have made Sat. mornings difficult, and that's the only day I'm allowed to go. I still think it's great practice. It can only get better, right?

Hi Sir Richard, My point about dealing with the fast foot traffic wasn't directed particularly at you Sir Richard. I was using "you" generally. My intention was to explain to anyone new to busking who might be reading this thread that the fast foot traffic at a farmers market would make it a tough place for a new busker still in training.

Spots where people are walking around with no particular purpose (like walking in a public park) are good places for people new to this work to get training because it's easier to stop folks.

Shoppers at the farmers markets have a purpose. They're on the move. They're shopping for produce. They're moving from vendor to vendor. That makes them a harder to stop.

A farmers market can be a money maker for an experienced busker. I just wanted to make sure we didn't give a beginning busker who might read the thread the idea that a busy farmers market would be a good place to train.

I was in no way suggesting that you personally should not busk at your local farmers market. I'm sure you'll bring home some nice hats from your local market.

Thanks for your kind remarks. Nice hats would be cool but the experience is what I'm looking for. I thought about buying some fruit from the local vendors & using them as final loads, then giving a short commercial on the great quality & prices of their wares. Just a thought.

Sir Richard,

I'm curious as to why you said parks are out of the question? Is there some city ordinance that prevents you from busking in your city's public parks?

Several of the parks in my city have large playgrounds that attract big numbers of families even on weekday evenings and weekday mornings in the summer.

In fact, on my way home this evening I thought I might stop by a park in my area which is always loaded with families and it was. My plan was to make up for the small take at the farmers market. In fact it was so crowded I couldn't get a parking spot!

I drove through the lot twice but no spot. Too bad, I could have definitely made up for the low take from the market. It was about 75 degrees and beautiful weather with families everywhere. I had to just go home and leave all those dollar bills in their pockets and purses, so sad.

Needless to say if I don't have a booking next Thursday I'll be at that park all evening rather than that little farmers market.

Chris, A fellow okie! I'm from Mustang originally but my family now all lives in Bartlesville.

Besides farmers markets what other venues have you found in OK to busk? I remember May fest used to rock. They would pay good and you could pass the hat. My partner Kevin did it every year for a long time with his troupe, "Darn Good and Funny."

Ted

Rotten,

Love your journal thread! Go man go! Mayfest still rocks! I had a great spot at this year's Mayfest and cleaned up. I perform at lots of festivals as a paid performer but I also busk at the same time on some.

The Tulsa metro area is about one million (includes suburbs) so there are lots of parks to work in. OKC has a huge fest in April that allows buskers (they don't pay so you gotta pass the hat there.)

We don't have any big tourist attractions in OK where buskers congregate. OKC has rebuilt their downtown with and artsy district with a canal I got a buddy who does fire & juggles there sometimes. Tulsa is trying to do a similar thing. Our old urban neighborhoods were destroyed in the late 1970s with "urban renewal" which is a bummer.

I'm kind of a jack of all trades here in OK. I piece it all together with everything from libraries, corp. work, indoor expo shows, casinos, paid festivals, busking at fests, parks, I'll be going back into restaurants when it get's cold. Heck I even pitch decks once in a while! I'm full-time with a stay-at-home wife/mother and 4 kids, that's my best trick!

Next time you go to Bartlesville give me a heads up. Not too many of our kind in these parts. BTW I can relate, I performed in a theater inside a theme restaurant here in Tulsa for over 11 years. It closed for good in Feb. of this year so I'm hittin the bricks cuz the graving train has left the station!

To answer your question, YES! This is the "People's Republic of Illinois." You must have the proper authorization to do anything! I see that you live in Tulsa, I have family down that way! My daughter lives there with her two girls & my son lives with his family in nearby Sapulpa; he's been trying to get us to move down that way for the last couple of years. Interesting!

Sir Richard,

I will be performing at 12 different Tulsa area libraries during June & July. If your daughter's girls are young enough for a library magic show, let her know she can find my schedule on the Tulsa Library's website. If she plans to bring them to a show please tell her to introduce herself to me after the show.

If they are looking for a fun outing on any of the last three weekends in June, I'll be appearing at the Pawnee Bill Wild Show in at Pawnee Bill Ranch & Museum west of Tulsa.

Please let me know any time you might be coming to Tulsa and we'll try to connect. We have two magic shops here and an active Fellowship of Christian Magicians club. Tulsa is a great place. My contact info is on my website.

Definately will do! My daughters girls are certainly old enough, as our my son's kids!(He works for the Holley Corp in Tulsa.) I was trying to find out about clubs in the area! Looking forward to it!

Chris,

You have to be a jack of all trades to make it in OK. I did it for ten years myself. The exact same list as yours. The OKC Metro library system was a great summer gig.

Years ago I tried to get street shows going in Bricktown. It wasn't what it is today though and the local authorities didn't want us.

Are you talking about Rex doing fire and juggling? I knew him years ago. Is Steve Smith, aka Tupper, still around the Tulsa parts?

"Darn, Good and Funny" was the first buskers at Mayfest. Kevin loved working there.

Good to meet you.

Yes Rex! The Orange Guy. Did he wear a bright orange suit when you knew him? We worked the same casino a few years ago. I bumped into him at a country club event last Sept. He said he was busking in Bricktown sometimes. Someone from the OK Arts Council was talking about having a buskerfest in Bricktown, but that was a while ago and nothing ever came of it.

I'm also buddies with Stephen Smith (Tupper) as well. I don't see him appearing as Tupper much anymore. I think his main character these days is Prof. B-Looney. He wears a comedy lab coat when he's twisting. Stephen and I do many of the same libraries and country club events. He also does a Benjamin Franklin historical/educational act. He looks just him!

He used to come by and catch my show in the theater at Casa Bonita sometimes. He's a nice guy. Do you remember Casa Bonita in OKC? I was at he Casa Bonita here in Tulsa for 11 years.

Did you know a guy named George who did a medicine/rainmaker show at Frontier City back in day? He goes by Prof. H.P. Hedgethicket III Esquire. He's got a really funny act. We work a lot of the same festivals around the state.

When I knew Rex he was a clown. Can't remember the name but he was blue and white at the time.

I talked to the Okc. arts council a few months ago about performing at the Arts Festival. It didn't pan out.

I new Stephen from when he lived in OKC. We worked together all the time. He's great.

I loved Casa Bonita. We had a small one in OKC but it shut down a long time ago. I went to one in Denver CO once and it was amazing. They had a fire eater and a magician and a waterfall. As a little boy it was a huge impression. AND Free helium balloons!

I think I do know George. I think he was around Oklahoma Shakes during a production I was in. Short guy that does juggling and stuff? I know he was an entertainer out at Frontier City.

I'll give you a heads up next time I come through town. I don't make it home often these days.

Chris, have you been contacted by Fort Gibson about their Corn Festival coming up in June? We're about 10 minutes east of Muskogee, and they're really trying to ramp up their entertainment for their weekend festival, this will be their third year and it keeps getting bigger. If you're interested I can see if I can get the contact info for you. I came and saw you up in Tulsa a few years back, Aaron Smith introduced me to you. You have a great act. Best, Jim

Jim,

Thanks for nice words about my act, I really appreciate it. I just talked a one of the ladies in charge of the Sweet Corn fest. I'm already booked for that Sat. 6/25 but I might come to town for a show on Friday night after the parade and before the street dance.

If you know anyone who is involved with the festival please let them know you really liked my act, it will help to have a personal reference from someone who has actually seen my act. If you know anyone else in town who has seen me please ask them to let the festival planners know about me.

It's always nice to squeeze one in at the last minute. It's like a bonus for the week.

Did you see my act at the theater in Casa Bonita?

Hi Chris, I'll put the bug in their ears for you, no worries. There are a couple of organizers of the festival that go to our church, I'll hit them up as well.

Casa Bonita it was, the routine that stuck out in my mind was your linking ring routine. If you've never been to Ft Gibson, right at the intersection where they set up is a nice pavillion with a decent amount of grass. I don't remember too much going on around the pavillion that last couple of years, they mainly left it open for foot traffic between the food vendors and inflatable jumpers. Should be a good setup for you if someone doesn't snag it first.

Thanks Jim,

If you PM me your email I'll let you know if I'm coming to Ft. Gibson on 6/25. I quoted a fee to the organizers for a family show on Friday night so I'd appreciate it if you didn't mention anything about my busking. This is type of small festival that book as a paid performance.
