I have always got the impression that many magicians do not like R+S, this is just my impression? For me I think if you use it effectivly it works great because not many laymen or any at all know about it. So please could youtell me what you think about it.
Thanks Paul |

It's clever and you can create some baffling routines. The downside is the performing conditions, if it is really hot and humid it will soon become unreliable under multiple repeats. I have created several effects with the principle.

Where should we store our rough and smooth decks then? Right now in Los Angeles California it's around 90 plus degrees and I keep my R/S decks in a room that has no air conditioning. Will that be a problem because I just purchased a band new Invisible deck.

Someone else had the idea in another post to put your cards in a tupperwear container when you aren't using them. I bet that would help prolong your ID

What kills the R/S is humidity not the heat.
Ok, usually, in some places it is hot and humid and that is a killer combination. It is one of the greatest principles ever - I don't get it why in magic ads they put "no R/S" R/S has great impact on laymen - so what if you can't fool magicians with it...? |

They probably put that in dealer adds so that some magicians don't think "I know how it's done, therefor I won't buy it."

Someone in another post has recommended those little packets that are often found in electronics. They help reduce humidity and can be used along with the cards in a tupperware container. Also, to help keep the cards in top shape, wash your hands prior to handling and clean any surfaces used.

If you're going to use dessicants (moisture absorbers
such as silica gel beads) you have to keep in mind that in areas of humidity higher than about 50% the dessicant is ineffective. It will quickly reach its maximum capacity of absorption. You would also have to replace them alot. Of course if you get the kind that you can heat you can reuse it but most places you see it, it comes in packets and I don't know if you can heat those. The little beads can be heated for reuse. A tupperware and some beads might work pretty good if you really think it is worth all the fuss. PS It is not the same thing as the things used for electronics. You also can't use the little oxygen absorbers found in stuff like beef jerky. These are slight variations. Electronics use a dessicant an oxygen absorber and a corrosive gas filter type thing. So don't get the wrong thing!

I speak as one who dislikes R+S cards. For some reason, my ham-fingers just do not handle them well enough for performance purposes -- and I've tried them on and off for 30 years. So, while it could be a woeful lack of practice on my part, I've come to believe that it is simply one of those effects that doesn't suit me.
But give me a shortcard, and I'm a happy man. Billgussen |

Just look at the Invisible Deck. It has consistently stood the test of time as one of the best effects EVER done with cards IMO. That was one of the very first tricks I ever purchased, and talk about jaws dropping!!
Plus it provides an "out" when needed. All the best, Dave |

I really like rough and smooth effects and agree with the fact that most lay people do not know about it, which is way in our favor. I do'nt think you want to get carried away to the point of overkill with it but mixed in with other stuff, it keeps 'em off balance.
The Inv. deck as already mentioned plus my favorite 3 card monte is a r/s effect and one of my favorite card tricks uses 2 decks, one r/s and one "normal". Good stuff! GlenD

I have found R & S decks difficult to handle naturally when it comes to splitting the roughed cards.
I have got round this by making my own decks and only roughing the top two thirds of the card. This makes the cards much easier to handle naturally when it comes to pushing off the roughed card at the selected point of the deck ie I push off on the bottom third - non-roughed portion. |
