I've eaten parts of bulbs for many years now - drunken party trick. I don't think wisdom comes from the amount of glass ingested.

Sincerely Todd, if your man can give references to the case then fine - standard medical teaching is that most pieces come out & if it's big enough to see on xray, you keep the punter in until it comes out.
Glass embolism is a risk of Injections using too big a needle and getting fragments I.v. - but I can't find any case reports of it from ingestion ( and case reports aren't evidence - just isolated incidents, until you get a critical mass of them).

I'm not spoiling for a fight, but I need to understand the evidence, because every day some kid comes into a&e after eating glass, and they get xrays, occasionally observed, and very very rarely kept nil by mouth in case they get a gut laceration, which most often settles conservatively.
I will graciously concede all my points when faced with better, more up to date teaching than I have at present, but as far as I'm aware, my line is current emergency medical thinking

There are many out there that are looking for ANYTHING that will justify their desire to eat glass and allow them to permit themselves to do it. Doc Steve, with your post you are doing just that.
