Hello Mark,
My interest in the old Dotty Spots Paddles trick—often included in many beginners' magic sets—was rekindled a few years ago after watching your close-up performance DVD. It is a marvellous effect and goes down extremely well with audiences as I have discovered. More recently you performed the Dotty Spots during your interview at the Browsers Den, and on both occasions concluded with the complete disappearance of the paddles. Do you also vanish the paddles when not seated at a table? I personally use a simple cigarette-type vanish when standing. You mention the Dotty Spots Paddles as one of your most performed tricks. What other items do you carry to entertain at the drop of a hat, and what are your thoughts on impromptu performances? Thanks, Martin |

Ask Paul Pacific. He has seen me millions of times doing impromptu work and he knows my thoughts on it. I am too tired and am going to bed. When I feel better and in a good mood (which happens once every few weeks for a few minutes) I may well expand on the matter.

OK. With regard to the Dotty Spots it is my favourite trick and I have been doing it for over 50 years. The Browser's Den videoclip shows me doing it about 8 minutes into the clip. Magicians dismiss it as a novelty shop item and in fact it only costs $5 at my local magic shop. That is perfectly fine with me.
And yes, I also use a cigarette vanish to make the paddle disappear when standing. When seated I simply lap the paddles. As for impromptu close up magic this is what I do best especially with cards. And my advice on this is to manipulate the PEOPLE. Any fool can manipulate the cards. Great magicians can manipulate the PEOPLE. |

And here it is again.
http://www.browsersden.ca/MarkLewis.wmv Eight minutes in and you will see me do the Dotty Spots. The last 15 minutes or so of the clip I do the Svengali routine and a card trick with a regular deck. |

Aha! The clip is on You Tube now divided into segments. This should be easier for you. Here is the Dotty Spots clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JJdC6NEr_8

I didn't really answer weenieboy. I also carry two dice for the Dr SAck Dice trick. Two copper and silver coins plus a handkerchief for Expansion of Texture. Nowadays I have a whole extravaganza of a routine with those times starting off with Spellbound, Coin change in hand routine, leading up to expansion of texture.
I sometimes carry some silver foil to do Ramsey's four little beans trick. I make small balls out of the foil. When I was younger I always used to carry a swami gimmick but I don't bother nowadays. I also used to have a cigarett pull but that has gone by the wayside too. And I would always carry a wallet with all sorts of packet tricks therein and I had a 3 and a half of clubs there which is one of my favourite tricks. I don't carry these items around any more. I should probably read my own "dropped details" theory again. Of course I always carry a pack of cards around with me every day, all the time. With that alone I could go on for hours if I needed to. When I was younger I would carry two decks for the Do As I Do trick. As you can tell I am a great believer in impromptu magic. |
