I like the idea of using my business card in magic tricks so that the participants have a momento that also has my contact details. I was wondering how you guys do it and what makes a good business card for magic tricks? Single sided (so the other can be signed) playing cards with details on the back?
so what makes a good card, how do you incorporate it into a trick? Many thanks, Danny |

Hi Danny, I like using one sided cards.
I have two mentalism effects that I do impromptu and write the revelations on the back of the cards. I let the individuals I am doing the effects for turn over the business cards to see what was written. Since this is the end of the effect the business card is in their hands. I find this works well. The main reason I give out a business card is for the science communication business so not much need to do it magically. Things I would say is get your card well designed and well printed. My card are printed both sides and have a matt coating on them. People remark on how nice they look and feel. Also friends have commented on the professional clean look they have. Remember the handing the card over is probably the first contact they have with you and what there going to take away. I think if you are going to use the back of the card to be singed or written on get it printed with at least your web address on it.
Sorry I dint answer your question there be plenty of people covering that but I hope this helps.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

You can have your business card made as a 52 on 1 card or a 3 1/2 of clubs, etc.

"Step Twelve: Publicity Stunts" in 13 Steps to Mentalism suggests a simple mindreading effect involving a business card with a bunch of numbers on the back and a swami gimmick. (It also contains tips on designing cards and other promotional stuff).
Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic has a method for magically printing a business card from blank cards. Scott F. Guinn and Richard Busch released an e-book titled Positively Positive, which teaches an effect where the spectator mentally chooses one of three imaginary coins and "flips" it, and the performer writes a prediction on a business card (or other small scrap of paper) of which coin the spectator selected and if it's heads or tails up. |

I was just thinking that!
Several people I know have designed their cards so that an Out to Lunch type effect is possible. Mark Wilson details quite a few handlings (he calls them Genie Cards) in the Complete Course in Magic.
...what if I could read your mind?

There is unique and completely fun new business card out there. Some creative kid a couple of years ago started making these and it took off. Since then he has expanded his business and marketed a few other designs as well. Check them out http://cardnetics.com/

Those cards are sweet! I was thinking on getting bicycle to print my details on the fase of their cards, keeping their design on the back...

It depends on whether you are giving out your card at the end of a performance or if you are using it at first contact. If you are, say working in a restaurant, and you hand your card out after each performance, it does not need to be fancy as they have (hopefully) already been impressed and are just really looking for your details.

I recently saw Seo-Magic performing their "Super Wallet". A really cool way to hand out your business card. Except that you can perform other great effects! I found it very funny and very stunning when I first saw it live. And I think that's what it should be!

I only used one side of business card, so I can write something in other side.
most of the time, I used to write a prediction for my free will routine (perfect if I bring my z wallet), or I used to my swami gimmick routine (based on 13 step to mentalism book). |

Gary Darwin has an interesting idea with a TT to change something like a cotton ball into a spongy powder applicator that has your info written on it. Its not a card but its a good giveaway that someone may keep, and it achieves the same effect.

Business cards are an alternative to playing cards if you are stuck for space. I am currently looking at getting some printed so let me know how you go on!!

For some great tips on doing magic with your business card and leave your audience with something memorable, I highly recommend Easy to Master Business Card Miracles DVD by Michael Ammar. There are a lot of great tips on here to get your thought process going.
I have found also that any trick that requires billets or cards can be reformatted for business cards. On some of my cards I have images from psychological forces so that when I have someone think of these forces, I can hand them a card. |
