Hi Mark. I am really enjoying your contributions here. I know you spent time in Ireland, so here is a question that might hark back to that time.
Rumour has it that you were influential in the development of Quentin Reynold's famous five minutes with a pocket hanky routine. Any comments?
Also, were there any Irish magicians that you rated as worth a look? Tony

I don't want to talk about Quentin Reynolds. The bloody Irish love stirring it up! I am not rising to the bait. Munton tried it and I resistem him too. As for Irish magicians that were worth a look most of the ones I knew were bloody useless and I expect the situation hasn't changed. Barry Sinclair was pretty good as was Tony Sadar. I really can't think of anyone else.

I have seen Keith Barry only once and that was on TV. I did not approve of the way he did that horrible stabbing trick using someone else's hand. Typically bloody Irish making someone else take the risk. Furthermore I heard the chap swears on stage. I really detest profanity when performing.

Keith swears a bit, but he is a solid performer and getting better all the time. Now he is ending his mentalism show with a hypnosis segment. Barry Sinclair is a legend - and a great conversationalist. Tony Sadar I have only seen once, but I really enjoyed him. Funny the three you mentioned are all hypnotists - perhapst the Celts are good at it?

Shame you won't rise to the bait and dish the dirt on others. I promise I won't tell...

Quentin knows where to find me if there is anything he wishes to discuss. Let me leave it at that.

Since people here insist on talking about Quentin with whom I have fallen out and would be delighted if I heard he had fallen into the River Liffey I may as well make use of it by quoting something he said on this very forum some time ago. Here it is:

"I have no hesitation, nor have I ever had any hesitation or reluctance in acknowledging you as the finest card magician I have ever seen performing for laymen in an impromptu situation.

At conventions I have seen magicians, hailed as some of the world's best by their peers who I know would die a thousand painful deaths in the venues I have seen you perform. Venues where I have seen tough and hostile groups intrigued, tamed and turned into cheering fans in minutes and left shouting for more.

Your understanding of crowd psychology, direction of attention, getting people to relax, gaining their attention, keeping and controlling it are all part of what sets your performances apart.

You are also a superb Svengali pitchman and I can vouch that on your first day in Dublin you sold over 400 decks.

You are also a first class copywriter and have an excellent turn of phrase. If you put your mind to it you could be making thousands of dollars plus royalties from writing sales letters"

It is indeed true that I am a most wondrous performer but of course I hardly need Quentin to point it out because he isn't the only one. Here is something from Peter Snow, one of the finest street magicians in the world.

"I can assure everyone who has not seen him perform his card work for laypeople that you've really missed something. I saw him many times as a youth perform spontaneously in restaurants, Cafés and so on and he always got extraordinarily strong reactions and his work was an impromptu "event" that was strictly devoid of any sense of a prepared close-up magic show.
I learnt much from watching him work and he was certainly much stronger than many magicians who are considerably better known than him."

There. You now know what a genius you have in your midst. Not that I am one to brag of course. I would hate anybody here to think that I was immodest.

Do you have any tips regarding crowd psychology and control? ... When you're in a good mood, of course.

No. I am still in a bad mood because I have just found out that after Munton irritated me immensely by informing me how put a signature which in actual fact led to his products rather than mine he gave me another link promising that this would be the correct one. I was suspicious of it but he promised faithfully it would be all right. Luckily I screwed it all and it came out all grey and unlinkable. I found out just now that I was inadvertantly putting a link to bloody Jolly Roger's products instead. No wonder I am not selling many books with all this childish interference. Anyway he sent me a third link which at last seems to be the correct one. I might be able to sell something now.

I really think that as a distinguished VIP here I should be treated with more respect by lowly members of the Busker's Forum.

No, I didn't. I promised it wouldn't lead to my site. Anyway, you should be thanking me, because without my help you would not now have the correct link.

Honestly, no gratitude at all.

I just realised that when I answered Tony's question I said that I really couldn't think of any good Irish magicians apart from Tony Sadar and Barry Sinclair. I have been so distracted by Munton that I made a glaring ommision. I completely forgot to mention that one of most fabulous close up magicians in the world lived in Ireland when I was there and he is still there now. His name is Daniel 0'Donoghue and I expect few here have ever heard of him. This is a great pity because you would have to go a long, long way before you find one as good as he is.

I shall relate a story about him. His great idol was Albert Goshman. He worshipped the very ground this man walked on. In fact he worshipped him so much he cajoled the Irish magicians to bring him over for the Irish convention which they duly did. Goshman was an awful misery the whole time who only brightened up when he sold something or someone told a dirty joke. He grumpily and reluctantly watched Dan perform.

At the end of the convention Dan was deputised to drive the great man to the airport. Dan is one of those rare magicians who welcome criticism so on the journey he plucked up his courage to ask Goshman what he thought of his act. He said, "Don't be afraid to criticise me. I will not be offended. In fact I welcome criticism especially from someone like yourself because I know it will help me develop" Grumpy old Goshman testily replied, "You haven't yet got to the standard yet where I am able to criticise you"

After that Dan no longer idolised Goshman. The moral of the tale is never to upset people who idolise you. Goshman was in fact quite wrong since Dan was brilliant even then and I am sure he is still brilliant not.
Remember you heard about him first from me.

I would have expected Billy McComb to get a name check at least.

I was thinking of the Republic of Ireland rather than the Holy Province of Ulster. Billy was from Northern Ireland and spent most of his performing life in the UK so he doesn't count especially since he conned me that the Nap Hand was a lousy trick because he didn't want me doing it. Incidentally my doctor at the time went to medical school with him.
