Who knows, it might be as good as that blue tubing you gave me a couple yrs ago (it was thicker than the stuff from mendels). |

I recently received a used copy of Ring Leader and needed a nice cord for the effect. I went to JoAnn fabrics and got these:
One is a velvet tubing just like Greg uses in the video. The other is a satin cord that I though might be nice if I had to use a ring that was lighter, like a ladies ring. I just wanted to add this because so many people looked and looked and couldn't find any of this "Velvet Tubing" locally. You have to look for Velvet Tubing. If you ask for cord you will never find it. |

I too recently found velvet "cord" (the aforementioned velvet tubing) available at a local JoAnn Fabric store in three different colors - a beautiful deep purple, burgundy red and true navy blue. It was in the section where they sell the ribbons and other similar things on spools and was sold by the yard for something like $.68/USD per yard - not bad at all! Too bad I did not pick any up that day because I cannot remember for the life of me which location it was!
I have never seen it sold at any of the other local craft/hobby stores such as Hobby Lobby or Michael's. |

That is a much better price than what I found. The tubing I found in the burgundy was $2.99 per yard. I did have a coupon for 40% off. There were only two colors that I could locate and that was Burgundy and black. The black was cheaper. I think it depends on the material. I also found these in the section where they sell ribbon and other trim fabric by the yard.

Yes, I found it in the same section along with a host of other things (ribbon, plastic pearl strands, different types of ropes/cords, etc.) sold by the yard. The three that I saw were quite nice in quality and very supple. As a matter of fact I had even carried it over to the bolt of velvet fabric that sells for $36/yard and it felt very much the same as that, which is what surprised me because of the price. Good velvet cannot be faked!

For any Project Runway fans - here's the selection at Mood:
http://www.moodfabrics.com/trims/cords/v......odogIAKg Looks like about 17 different colors. No idea as to anything else about it though. |

Greg Wilson is right in Ring Leader. The Velvet cord allows you to do an elegant ring on string in any environment. So much classier than a shoe lace.

I stopped by a JoAnn fabrics today with zero success. Finding velvet cord in that place is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The people in there were of minimal help. They never heard of velvet cord. I might just as well been searching for a hamburger in there. Another dead end...

I too struck out at two JoAnn stores near me today. I currently have a lead from Mendel's (on Haight St. in San Francisco) - just waiting to hear back on specifics from them but they have a small variety of colors available that are not on the new website just yet.
I also had a thought: You may end up paying through the nose in some of them, but I am betting that if you check with a local tailor that does good/high quality work, they may have some on hand or know just where to get it. I am going to try a few in my area on Monday. |

You have to ask for velvet tubing
I asked for velvet cord and the girl was gone 15 minutes. I asked for velvet tubing and she was back 2 minutes later confirming that they had it. |

I always ask for velvet tubing and it has been my experience in various parts of the U.S. that it is called a number of different things. Aside from that though, it is not necessarily a common item in every location so not every store will stock it. That is the hardest part.

If you don't need it immediately it may be best to simply order it online. I bought enough to make 4 cords for ring and string effects. That should last me forever hopefully.

I stock Velvet Tubing for ring on cord effects. I always have red and white in stock. I have some black and purple in very limited supply and those two colors will be discontinued.

Larry, is your tubing good for finger ring effects? I looked at your photos and although the penny in the photo helps to get an idea, I want to make sure it's not too thick.
Thanks! |

My velvet rope is 3/8 inch in diameter. I use it for ring off cord effects using a wedding type ring and for larger harness rings. I obtain spools of it from a commercial trim manufacturer who supplies plush velvet materials for clothing makers and not craft stores. This is what I use in Wedding Ring Redux and Comedy Rope and Ring both from the Kingdom of The Red book and also performed and taught on the companion DVD.
I can supply custom lengths if needed. Red and white always in stock. Royal Purple an Widow Black in limited supply. For multiple velvet ropes, I refund through Paypal any overpayment for shipping built into the price. I only charge what it costs me. Larry |
