In my school (in Australia which is new to the world of magic) I am known as the "magician". (As I'm aware most high-school teenage magicians are.)
This is probably the one climate the majority of you 'pros' are outdated, or little experience in. I have experienced and read, teenagers, along with toddlers are very hard to control, mainly being the fact that they nearly always, unlike any layperson I have performed for, don't appreciate the entertainment value of the art, merely see it as a test to "catch out the magician", mainly for social purposes. This isn't a huge issue for me and it does certainly test my audience control skills, but what I do find irritating is not knowing who you have and haven't performed certain tricks to, and what tricks to perform to certain people (as I like to live high-impact tricks ready for class performances). I am, as I am sure my near proximity, fellow locker-mates are starting to get very tired of the age-old, "you know a magician can only show his tricks once, one is a trick, twice is a lesson...). Have any of you got other phrases that fit the same purpose? Another tactic I generally use is, "how about I show you something better...". What I was mainly wondering was, though, because at the most I carry a couple of rubber bands, and a REGULAR deck of cards, or sometimes nothing because I don't have time to set up for anything, I have a limited amount of (nearly) impromptu tricks. What do you fella's do if someone asks to see some magic but you can't give it to them. I find holding off makes a bigger impact when you do pull out a miracle, but there are only limited amounts of times you can do this. What are your 4 best tricks that only use a deck of cards/rubber bands or impromptu? 8) Cheers, Gibson |

1st, all the pros here are very familiar with the situation you just described. For impromtu I do some coin tricks that I came up with on my own. g'day mate.

First of all I don't see carrying a deck as impromptu.
If I feel like performing it will depend on what's available. If I don't feel it's the right time to perform I'll simply tell them I'm not in the mood or have nothing new to show them.. 4 tricks I might do with elastic bands and a deck: 'Homing Card - cards - Carlisle. 'Bound to Fool' - bands & deck - Sankey. 'Traveling Cash' - banknote & bands - I think Harlan (?). 'Linking Bands' or 'Crazy Man's Handcuff'. Coins would be one my choices when purely impromptu. |

Iam gussing you have a load of effects you have brought and don’t really use. So take one of these get it up to a good standard. This trick say invisible deck you will perform for a week. Then leave it alone. This is great for remembering how seen what also taking a trick out and doing a heap of times might make it a main stay.
Also check this out, http://magicfriday.blogspot.com/ . you might want to do the same or just do magic on one day.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

LOL G'day guys,
thanks for your responses, yes, I have found simple slights using coins and pens, are practical and get big responses, but this is the very situation I try to avoid with this audience, because after the second or third time, the layman will start to look the opposite direction and shout out, or something along those lines. Jaz, I didn't mean to imply that carrying around a deck was impromptu, just that I at most I carry a deck and/or rubber bands (when I do carry rubber bands I usually slip a SLR on as well which is handy), also most of the time (e.g. in between classes)I don't feel like doing magic, but every now and then I feel I should do just a "little something" to keep up the magic image, something like Bound to Fool (thanks), and Crazy Man's Handcuffs which I use with SLRs. Yes, Yellow Custard, I have started pulling out my bottom drawer tricks, and have been looking around for card tricks I have mastered then put (the names) down on paper but I hate it when I forget the certain slight needed and have to try to dig the dvd/book up or take extra time practicing it! Also, with the traveling cash, I have tended not to purchase any 'bill' trick since I purchased extreme burn 2.0 and couldn't make it work because of our stupid, sort of laminated, currency, making it unable to stay bent/scrunched up lol. (even after reopening it [I was holidaying at the time] and [illegally] trying to print a resemblance of our 5 and 20 dollar notes [which took a long while] on regular paper, and finding out that wouldn't work because the paper would soon tare...) I recently, though, because of the rave reviews and effect I did purchase Chop by Craig Petty, and was still disappointed because using something other than a bill (e.g. napkin) takes some of the randomness/gimmick-less out of the effect, not to mention the fact that it's not an option for the spectator to let you keep the note!, (and I will soon see if forging the note on paper (just for the routine, not revelation in lemon) works though. Any thoughts on this as well would be hugely appreciated! Wonderful blog, yellow custard, are you referring to your 'Stage Show Thoughts for Magicians?' if so I am, so I can hand out business cards, trying to set up a website, get some info printed on bicycle cards (as my business cards) and start working restaurants to get testimonials for the website and eventually, once I'm old enough, try to get a corporate gig. (I know it might be a bit much but hey, at least I've got a plan!) I've been watching Benji's blog, and I know it's a bit off the topic but does anyone think I should put my time towards making e.g. a website, business cards, banners... is completely necessary or would it be more beneficial to just start performing in restaurants? Cheers, Gibson |

Hi 123crampt
Why not make up a Extreme burn set from American bills? You can build your patter around the fact at how lucky Americans are to have bills that can do this! hth Ralph

This is were knowledge is more important then the latest new magic trick on the market. Try buying Bobo Coin Magic Book, the new revised hard bound volume. The whole 1st 2 sections have lots of tricks with a coin.
Also get the books and DVDs on the material of such people like like Ross Bertrum, he has a lot of magic tricks, whole routines with coins with small change. He was considered an expert close up person. Knowledge is power! When I have nothing and asked to perform, borrow some quarters and do a set of vanishes, penetrations, and transpostions with the coins. They leave happy. Learn the $100 bill switch without the TT. It is in the original manuscript. There is a lot of good impromptu magic in many books that will make peoples jaw drop. All you have to do is read and practice it, and you are good to go anywhere with nothing. At school you will find pens, pencils, paper, paper clips, rubberbands, dollar bills, coins, if you cannot do magic with all these things on hand, you are doing something wrong. |

Card magic can be totally impromptu, providing you borrow the deck. Some easy effects to perform with borrowed cards: Twisting the Aces, The Last Trick of Dr. Jacob Daley, Cannibal Cards, any number of Reverse Location effects and Cards Across to name some of my favorites.
For rubber bands: Linking band effects and Crazy Man's Handcuffs are a given, but try things like Broken and Restored Band, Ring on Band, Travelling Bands, 2 In the Hand/1 In the Pocket (provided you have a small pile of bands to choose from), and any finger/wrist penetration effect. Coins are my favorite: Audio Coins to Pocket, any Coins Across using just 3 coins, Gadabout Coins, Coin Thru Hand/Handkerchief, Coin Flurry, Coin Matrix/Chink-a-Chink, etc. Borrow a bill and pen to do impromptu Pen Through Bill effects like Driven or Misleading Misled. |

If you're into "jazzing" a little, and willing to take some risks for freshness sake, you might want to check out something along the lines of Justin Higham's Secrets of Improvisational Magic.
