Does seem a pretty lame experiment.
However no experiment but a real event happened to me when a girl volunteered and just lay on the stage for the show. After the show it turns out she has two hearing aids in. I couldn't wake her up we tried everything. Her boyfriend just wanted to throw her over his shouldler and put her in the back of his van! To make matters worse the venue was being used the next day for he premiere of Rob Roy and all the stars were turning up. They put the lights on and started working on the stage for the next day. It took 45 mins to bring her around. When she came around she didn't recognise her boyfrieend and thoughtshe was shopping in town with her parents! Took a further 20 mins re-orientating her back into reality. That could easily have escalated into publicity I wouldn't want. Especially on the night before the premiere of a summer blockbuster! To be honest there was a crowd gathering watching what was going on but I was surprised as to how calm they all were. No one panicked no one blamed the hypnosis or the hypnotist. Just the girl who volunteered with the hearing aids. Last year despite the pre-talk asking anyone with any physical injury not to come up I had a young girl come up at half time asking me if I could hypnotise her? She said she couldn't clasp her hands since one of her arms was rubber! I just wonder what the TV show is going to be about? And even why its been commissioned since nothing much has been on tv for a while. |

What is the relevance of the hearing aids? Were they switched off? Could she not hear you?

I am not sure if she could hear me or not. Her boy friend turned them up to the point where they were whistling and her body was jerking. So he turned them down again. She could hear me once she eventually came round but didn't know where she was or even recognise her boyfriend. She thought she was shopping with her parents. another "weird" thing I thought was the calmness of her boy friend who wanted to just throw her over his shoulder and dump her in the van.
The truth is I don't know if she could hear me or not when I tried to wake her up. I pulled back her hair to talk into her ear found a hearing aid. Did the same with other ear to find the same. But the crowd blamed her for volunteering not the hypnotist. Everybody was very calm. Which surprised me. For nearly an hour! A part of the reason I suppose was the fact that they weren't in a hurry to close the place. Work was going on around us to get the venue ready for the next night. |

Well if she could hear you when she came around it suggests it was not an issue of hearing you.
Assuming it wasn't why do you think she did not respond? What is your suggested protocol for such situations? Anthony

The hearing aids were adjusted by her boy friend. They could've well have been low when she came up. She came up on the second half of the show and never responded to anything. There are a number of ways to bring a "sleeper" out of trance including taking them deeper before bringing them out to various suggestions that they are enjoying trance but now need to wake up. On the rare occasion this happens sitting someone up and repeating the procedure usually works.
She also thought she was in a shopping centre with her parents. No suggestions anything near this could have elicited that response. I have not experienced anything since like this. I once had some one do something similar. Despite the pre-talk about medical conditions it turned out she was diabetic and gone into "hypo". Her friends gave her a sugary drink and she was fine. But the show was interrupted near the start not at the end. |

I have heard of this happening before. My mentor told me that once he had something like this happen. The lady was taken to the dressing room made comfortable and she woke up eventually refreshed and feeling great. He also said a skin problem she had some rash on her chest and neck had disappeared.
The theories I have read or been told are that some people are so tired that part of them doesn't wake up or respond until they have had the rest they need. In some cases a process has been started by the relaxed state that wants to complete before terminating. Another theory is that there is an unconscious resentment of the hypnotist. Take your pick or create your own. I think it could be either or something else. |

I know from taking my mother to get a hearing aid fitted recently that the old models needed frequent messing about with depending upon changes in the environment. And that the new ones self adjust. When she finally woke up it was an empty auditorium there had been 1000 people in it before.
Could be something to do with that. But I really don't know and never will. |

MP, that's a great story, and luckily it did not bounce back on you with bad publicity.
I did a show once where, thirty minutes after the end, one of my volunteers collapsed and had a massive epeliptic fit. Everyone instantly blamed me. Luckily the guy's sister was there. She was a nurse, and told us that he had been warned not to take alcohol with the medication he was on. But he walked off the stage and knocked back two pints. He ended up in hospital, but luckily it didn't come back to haunt me. I love the idea of a girl on stage with her hearing aids turned down!

It could be that the aids needed adjustment for that environment. Its only recently hearing aids have become self adjusting.
