Abbott's is pleased to announce that David Laflin will be hosting the Magic Ministers Session at the 74th Get Together and will be assisted by his father Duane.
David and Teesha Laflin are Christian illusionists with a passion for the ministry. Thousands of people have been impacted by their unique and creative way of presenting the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. Their presentations have served churches and other ministries all across the United States and around the world. In fact, two months of outreach programs in India was the beginning of their full-time ministry. It was here that they truly discovered how effective the art of illusion can be in presenting the Gospel. In other countries, including the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Venezuela, India, Romania, Rwanda, Bolivia, and Guatemala they have taught native missionaries how to use creative teaching tools like illusions for effective evangelism. I've never been to the Abbott's Get Together - Hope to at some point and you can never go wrong with the Laflin's.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.

That's a long drive for you (I've made the drive to Reading PA a couple of times). Hopefully we see you there one day.

I hope to come, but money is a huge issue this year for me. Perhaps I will make it next year.

I most likely will be there unless a last minute oourt scheduling conflict comes up (which often does- that's why I missed last year's Friday morning lecture). Hope to see you there! By the way, that Friday in Colon is packed with good magic stuff- both Abbott's and FAB Magic have a lot going on pretty much day and night.

You are right about Friday, Hank moved the talent contest awards up to 4pm so that he could have the Calvert 100th birthday party in the dealers room after the Friday fireworks.

Here is just some of the things happening on Friday on August 5, 2011 in Colon, Michigan (does not include the makeshift outdoor dealers over by the High School of "The Magi", the close up magic taking place all over town like at The Legion hall, all the village folk holding garage and food sales, etc.). This is AMAZING- anyone near Colon on August 5 should make the trip- if could only be there one day of the entire magic week- that is the day I'd pick:
9AM: Magi Ministers Session with the Laflins (Abbott event- registration required)* 9AM: Colon Arts and Crafts Fair until 4pm 10AM: Showroom open (including Laflin, Abbott's, 5 others or more)*, Talent contest at High School*, FAB also open 11AM: Paul Romhany Lecture at FAB 12PM: Busking Competition/Street Performers downtown 1PM: James Dimmare lecture* 1PM: Free magic show at FAB with Jim Reams 2PM: Michael Finney lecture at FAB 2PM-4:30pm: Colon Historical Museum opened 2:30PM: Close up show with Rick Marotta, Ron Jaxson, John Luka and Pattrick Pryzysieke* 4:00PM: Contest Awards* 6:00PM: Magic A Poppin Show with Paul Romhany, Silly Billy, Justin Holbrook, Tony Dowell and the Illusions of Baffling Bill 8:00PM: Evening show with Kelly Pollock, Tim Arnold, Les Arnold and Dazzle, Dan Stapleton, John Calvert* Fireworks after the show 10PM John Calvert 100th Birthday party in showroom* Up to midnight and beyond?: goofing around at The Legion Hall, Curly's etc.. THAT IS A PACKED DAY OF MAGIC! |

I am quite sure Duane and Mary Laflin will be there in Colon again this summer. I got an email from them today (and I'm sure many of you got it as well)that the Laflins are starting a long term show in Custer, SD; and doing an ADVANCE conference in October in Pittsburgh. I'd love to make it to that this year!

My wife and I visited Abbott's last week for the first time. It was a pretty quiet day, but they were busy getting ready for the Get Together. We had a great time speaking with Greg about the history of the place...and he gave us a tour of the cemetary in which are the graves of many a famous magician.
Hopefully, we'll be able to attend next year's Get Together. And I hope the Laflin's are there next year as well. Roger, We drove by Kalamazoo on our way up to Lake Ann. (Our daughter was there at a camp) If our schedule hadn't been so tight, I would have dropped in to say Hi! Hope to see you again soon. andrew |

Roger,
I didn't get an email from the Laflins. Did it indicate the schedule for their shows in Custer, SD? Thanks. andrew |

I spoke to Duane Wednesday at the FCM convention. Duane was there as was Mary, and his son David (who also lectured). David and Duane's dealer tables were side by side. Duane, as usual, was very helpful to any and all folks who wanted to speak to him. In addition to lecturing at FCM, he is also lecturing at Abbott's for the "Magi-Ministers" session in Colon. Duane told me that Custer is a tourist area- not far from Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills (Custer County, SD). Duane also told me that he and Mary were very saddened by Hank Moorehouse's passing- that Hank was a mentor to him. Hank had already purchased his headstone in the Colon Cemetary and even pre-planned his own funeral with Duane- Duane commented on how Hank was so very an organized person. So Duane thought there would be some kind of memorial service at Abbott's this year. There were also available ADVANCE brochures for the October conference in Pittsburgh.
Regarding Hank, I mentioned it to the owner of the Riverlake Inn in Colon last Saturday- he too was very saddened by the news. Many folks did not know that Hank usually took some of the feature acts at The Get-Together each year over to the Riverlake Inn for huge dinner- and then picked up the very large tab every time. |

Duane is conducting the broken wand ceremony for Hank Moorehouse at 4pm on 8-6-11 at the Colon High School.
I also sent Duane a comment about his excellent FCM lecture notes (which I assume will probably be presented again in Colon 8-5 early AM by Duane at the Magi-Ministers lecture)regarding the use of the clever "Drum Head Tube". I use Sheldon Rhodes' idea of a Kleenex box (where you take the tissues from for the ends of the tubes- see More Than Magic #1, end of the first routine at http://www.ChristianMagician.org) hiding the drum head "gimic"- but I also attached to the back of my Kleenex box a little box holder for both the drum head tube gimic and the full/dropped off hank ball (see Duane's routine). So this solves the problem of where the hank ball goes in the routine. I also find that for myself that wrapping the metal slippery hank ball in natural color rubber bands makes it more "grippy", slightly larger, and easier to palm. |

I will be at FAB Magic in Colon today about 5pm- going to check out Rick's new version of "Fraidy Cat Rabbit" that has a cross and a church on it- always looking for new ideas. Randy Craven years ago made a Hippity Hop Rabbit type effect using the "praying hands" picture and a picture of Jesus. My guess is Rick's version probably is smaller and easier to pack (Randy's wood one was pretty large but solidly made). See the FAB Magic website for the ad regarding it.
