Eh? Self deprecatiating? ME? You must have the wrong chap! Still, I see you are from Ireland. You must have heard of Paul Goldin and Barry Sinclair. Two of the best three stage hypnotists I have ever seen. Did you ever see either of them work? Mind you, I expect Paul was before your time.

Yes you're right Mark, both before my time.Although I often seen Paul Goldin's Ad's in the newspaper (Before the internet boom happened) - of course that world is all very sexy now and Keith Barry has taken that mantel. Danny, my impression of Mark Lewis is a man who really doesn't take himself that serious, alas, a trait that is so missing among the "Legend in their own teatime generation"! Afterall I should know these things, I am a Mentalist!!

He's on the ball this kid whoever he is. And who are you, old chap? Or should I say , young chap? You must be young if you have never seen Paul Goldin or Barry Sinclair.

Hi Mark,
My name is Robbie & I am in my late 30's - so no spring chicken but still young enough to live my dreams!! I never seen them perform but I know of Paul Goldin. He advertised a lot in the newspaper for the usual - weight loss, stop smoking etc. I also know that you use to do a turn for a newspaper here in Ireland, you had quite the fan club for your piece!!

I was pretty famous in Ireland at one time. Newspaper articles galore abounded about me. But what piece are you talking about. And what fan club?

I am referring to your astrology columns for the Irish newspapers. It is my understanding that it was a very popular piece in it's day. A lot have followed on since, but bland and predictable would best sum them up!

Barry Sinclair is still performing and still doing great shows. Mark had the second best astrology column in the country; modesty prevents me from mentioning the best.

Actually my astrology columns were in many newspapers and were linked to my premium phone lines which were voice activated and read palms, tarot, numerology and the I Ching. I didn't actually have to be there and in fact didn't do a thing. It was quite profitable and I didn't do a stroke of work for the money once it was up and running. I even got cheques sent to me in Canada for a few years. Then one day the service provider of the phone lines sold the company for a million pounds. They had an office on the outskirts of Dublin. And who was their landlord? Believe it or not Paul Goldin whom we have just been talking about!
I was amused that they told me that everyone advised them against doing business with Paul because of his somewhat controversial reputation. They had some trepidation at first but found he was very easy to deal with and they were there for many years. When I went up to see them I also saw Paul at the same time. It was then that he told me that hypnosis was a load of baloney. Tony's astrology columns may have been better than mine. I have no idea since I never saw them unless he had a nom de plume at the time. I bet I made more money than Tony did though because of my premium phone lines which were part of the deal with the newpapers. When I was in Canada I got fed up doing the bloody horoscopes for a leading magazine so paid Michael Close's wife to do them instead. They weren't as good as mine but they were passable. They went out under my name. Then she got fed up with it too so I made a disastrous decision to get a chap called Adam Harmes to do them. Adam is now a distinguished professor and his academic career will probably come to an end now that I have divulged his previous career as an astrologer and a particularly bad one at that. In fact his horoscopes nearly put me out of business too. The magazine suddenly lost all desire to use them because of how horrendous they were. He recently came to my book launch and because he was mentioned in the book threatened me with his lawyers. I think instead that I should be sueing him for giving me a bad name with his horrendous astrology column. |

Mark, my astrology column was under the name Mannix - the Man who Knows. There was a horrible picture of me in a turban gazing cross-eyed at the camera, and the column was for the paper I was working on at the time, so I never made a penny extra. I never thought of the phone lines.
I did get a lot of great publicity on the national papers and the radio wien I predicted successfully the correct result for every rugby game during an entire season, despite having never seen a rugby game, either live or on television. I told the papers it was all down to how the rune stones fell, but the secret was far simpler. At the start of every week I would just ask the sports editor who was going to win, and he was never wrong. As I wasn't getting paid I should have just let him write the whole thing.

My deal was that I would do the horoscopes for free providing I got a free advertisement in the paper advertising my Tarot, I Ching, Numerology and Palmistry phone lines. In addition under every zodiac signe there would be a premium line for that zodiac sign. So I made some decent money overall even though the newspaper itself didn't give me any money. And of course it was tremendous advertising for my private one hour psychic sessions. And I was doing these horoscopes for many newspapers and Old Moore's Almanac for a considerable time before Adam screwed it up with his lousy horoscopes.
I suppose we should get back to talking about hypnosis now but I must tell you something funny. I did the horoscopes for several years for a certain Irish newspaper that I had better not name. In the end I got fed up with it since as Tony will no doubt confirm writing horoscopes is a terribly tedious business and it used to drive me insane. I phoned up the paper and told them I didn't want to do it any more and they made me laugh by saying, "Ah don't worry about it. You don't have to write them any more. We will just recycle the old ones" And they did and they still kept my free advertising going. I wish I had thought of it myself. |
