Here's the deal: I've got a part in a play. The role I play was partly created by myself and partly by my partners in crime. Our director wants me to find a historic figure, which has a biography which is as close to the character in the play as possible.
So I thought I ask you guys if you know a historic figure with following attributes: -He is a card shark, a cheat or a swindler or a con man. -He went to prison for a few years, because he got caught cheating. -Before he went to prison he fathered a boy with his then girlfriend. -After he has got out, the mother of his child cuts all contact with him. -He probably never became honest, although people thought he would. -There is a rumor which says that he murdered a near relative of his. -He maybe is a lunatic, as it is said, that he hears voices in his head. So, does anybody of you know such a historic person? Not all criteria have to fit, but the more, the better Thank you, Kurundur

Erdnase was what I thought of also. Since we don't know much, you could invent nearly anything for his past. Or ask Kaufman

One of the gentlemen who has been said to be Erdnase was a murderer and conman by the name of Anderson. The story matches his life. In my opinion, he was not Erdnase. But he was a real gambler and con man and murderer.

Actually, Erdnase was not written by Erdnase but by someone else with the same name.

A good friend just reminded me of this fellow - read the description!

Erdnase came to my mind as well. The O.P. didn't say what time period the play takes place in but I don't think that would really matter since the character could be fit into any century with a few minor changes made here and there.

Milton Franklin Andrews. I'm quite sure he's not Erdnase, but he did exist, was a cheater and suspected murderer, attempted to murder someone else, died in a spectacular murder/suicide. Or was it a double suicide? Or was it murder by the police, officially described as murder/suicide committed by Andrews? He had weird health problems, needed a special diet, and looked kind of strange with a sunken chest. And he did card tricks. If he were fictional, I'd accuse the author of being too over the top.
Information can be found in The Man Who Was Erdnase and The Annotated Erdnase. Andru

Also, check out some of the biographies in The Scoundrels Bibliography. Frank Tarbeaux, George Devol, Mason Long, Jonathan Green, and others from the 19th century all fit your profile to one degree or another. Knights of the Green Cloth provides a good overview of the period, and can help you decide who you want to learn more about, and where to learn it.
