Just re--did my entire website. What a pain in the augur! It took a week and still needs a little on-line tweaking, but it uses CSS and looks a ton better than the old site. Over the next month, I'll add the product page, kicking it off with "Puzzled," a kid-show mentalism effect, "Total Control," a walk-around effect, and "Psychic Dots," a wallet-sized mental effect. Just giving a heads-up to some of the mental-dudes I've befriended on the Café.

Michael-
You're advertising a mental show as well as the magic, but why no meta tag keywords related to mentalism? (Took a look at your source code. It's a whole lot neater than mine!) Bob |

Thanks, guys. The old site was looking rather lame, since it was my first attempt back in '05 or so.
Bob, I know about the tags. I just didn't get that aspect done before my self-imposed deadline (today, June 06). I'll be doing the metatags over the next week. Hope to eventually phase out the magic… when I start making what I need to with mentalism alone. JAlenS, thanks. I'm doing it myself. First experience with CSS. I've been playing with html since I did the first site. Simply picked up HTML For Dummies at Barnes & Noble. Jay, thanks for clearing that up. I was going nuts at the IBM meeting tonight, trying to figure out which necessary edits you spotted. David, thanks a bunch. I plan to clean it up just a tad more in the next week. Hope to add some video over the next six-months… soon as I figure out how they do that stuff. |

The metatags don't work anymore.
Google does not use them, so don't lose your time on them. :)

SEO is not an exact science, and anyone who tells you otherwise is daft. There ARE certain steps you can take to help raise your sites presence and ensure that your site is easily crawlable (I don't even think that is a word). Bing use metatags. Yahoo use metatags. When performing SEO on your site don't just aim to appease Google. Do it properly. Yes most engines focus mainly on content these days, but it doesn't take much time to fill in all of your meta info; especially when working with a 5-10 page site. Just a couple of months ago I had to optimise an ecommerce site which contains 120,000 parts and I STILL took the time to do the tags. I have 18 empty bottles of Nescafe instant coffee here to prove it. Content is certainly the most important thing to focus on. Here are a few guidelines I use myself when performing SEO for a living:
Many people argue over what you should/shouldn't do when optimising your site, and will probably disagree with certain things I have said above. Over the years I have found that following these steps is a very good (and very basic) start. Of course there is much more you could do, but the tips above should help get you going. Content is crucial - you can drive all the traffic in the world to your site but if it looks naff, or has content that will put the browser to sleep it was largely pointless. If you build good content - they will come. As an aside, you may want to fix these errors: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3......&group=0 I didn't check the CSS but you should probably do that also. I hope that helps! Please note that these are only MY opinions and I don't claim them as gospel. And if the "SEO experts" jump on this topic and starting asking me for credentials or proof of my SEO skills I will be more than happy to email them a photograph of myself yawning. Good luck! |

Luke´s advice is very good.
Truth: Google doesn't have Meta tags. Truth: A lot of other search engines use them.

Thanks a bunch, Sid! This whole thing is way beyond "HTML For Dummies," but I'm still learning. I did learn that Google still recommends metatags, so I'll work on those, as Bob suggested.

Exactly Jose. Don't rule them out. Microsoft is investing a lot of money in Bing.
It's certainly better to cover all bases. Michael, Google Analytics is your friend. And upload your sitemap to the Google Webmaster central. A world of frustrating trial and error awaits you. :) |

Thanks mate, I've been playing around of late with my own personal blog/portfolio - it's far from finished (or optimised).
You should take him up on the header Michael, he does nice work. |

The site looks very tidy Michael: the main job for a performer's site like this is generating bookings and increasing conversion, and your site certainly has a professional feel so it should do the trick nicely.
With promo stuff like this I always suggest that you invest some money in getting some decent photography done, ideally good dynamic studio shots. (I'm not talking about your mate who has a camera with lots of megapixels, I'm talking about someone with a studio who does photography all day every day) You have gone to a great deal of trouble and invested lots of time to create a slick and professional web presence, you need to make sure the product is visible, and that is you. In the little shot you have on the site you look the part, let everyone see! Phill

J. Prager, thanks for the amazingly generous offer. I think I want to wait just a little before going that direction, though. Perhaps, when I move closer to one field, instead of two. I looked at over 1000 different ideas for a header (even put together a few that had some "magiciky" elements and a few with "mentalism" elements) but settled on the simple swirls of contrasting blue, to hint at my "Bending reality…" tag-line. I really do appreciate your offer though.
Phill, I agree with you almost completely. I do need to get some really good promo shots. At the same time, I also need some really great response shots. I believe the "product" is just partially me. The main product is what the audience (client) will get from the show(s). That's why I highlighted laughter and applause in the majority of the photos (laughter , the main focus). Thanks, so much for the kind and generous advice. I appreciate it. As a follow-up, and the main reason I posted the site-redeux in the Penny forum, what are the key mentalism elements that one should use in a website? Magic has the advantage of colorful props, etc… but how does one spice up a mentalism theme in pictures and web layout? NOTE: Got a comment from one of my IBM friends. He was the only one to catch the double-"s" in "focussed," in my mission statement. I fixed it on my homepage and will do some more tweaking on the other pages tonight. Again, you guys are great! Thanks for all the help. |

Hero shots put the physical product front and centre, the lifestyle shots show the product being used by smiley people. In the context of my normal work, the hero shot would be, for example, a piece of garden furniture and the lifestyle shot would be a happy family having a barbecue in their beautiful garden and oh look, there's the teak table that's on offer this week. Both are important in selling: the in context lifestyle shot creates a mental image in which buyers can place themselves and the hero shot emphasises the product and allows the customers to mentally 'pre-buy'. So in this context, the lifestyle shot shows the audience enjoying your performance and the hero shot shows you being wonderful. You are right in that *both* you and the experience you deliver are the product and if you can capture and convey those both then you will find that your contact and conversion rates should climb even higher.
