I agree with shuffle board. I like it even better when adding the two selections into the mix, though that requires a mem deck.

Another vote for Dobson's "Echo," also available in his book WD40. You may also want to check out Tamariz's book, Verbal Magic, which is all hands off.

Harry Lorayne has a fair and absolutely hands-off effect wherein the spectator (I'm tired of writing "participant") shuffles the deck, cuts it and looks at the card on the face. They replace the stack and square the deck. The performer's back is turned. The spectator deals the deck into four, five, or six piles. It doesn't matter how many piles they deal. They pick up the pile with their card in it and the performer, with back still turned, stops them at their card as they deal. A local guy I know fried my friend over the phone with the effect.
I still haven't read one of Mr. Lorayne's books on memory so I can't remember the name of the effect nor which volume it appears in. Happily I do remember how to do it. No, I won't tell you in a PM.
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.

Sounds like "Stop!" from Close-Up Card Magic (and incorporated into The Classic Collection 1). However, as written, it can't be done over the phone. But yes, it's an excellent "magician does not touch the deck" trick!

Not trying to promote my own book, but there is an excellent effect in it (contributed by my friend Andrew Gerard) titled "Serial Killer".
It is devastatingly good. |

Juan Tamariz has a trick called "Neither Blind nor Silly" in his book Sonata.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPHuVYa_fVc What's great about this trick is that you can do another "Magician Does Not Touch the Deck Tricks" right afterwards (if you don't shuffle the cards like Juan did in the video). Vidar |

I am being a bit recursive here, going back to my own topic, but I just "finished" an amazing new book by Woody Aragon. It contains some devastating hands-off effects.
The book is called, "A Book in English." It is dynamite. Woody Aragon has a new blog here, appropriately named “A Blog in English.” http://woodyaragon.blogspot.com/
"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." "The dog did nothing in the night-time." "That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes. |

Another absolute miracle--- X Ray by Ben Harris. You are not even in the room when the spectator cuts the deck and picks the card

I don't know if it's been said, but I think Harry Lorayne's 'Out of this Universe' is fantastic. Nearly all of it can be done in the spectators hands and I haven't had a better reaction from people with anything else. You can easily set it up using his red/black set up as well, which everyone just thinks is another trick. It's one of my faves because everyone thinks it's impossible. I have people sitting around trying to come up with a mathematical way that it can happen for hours afterwards. Love it!

I just made reference to an effect in the “Books, Pamphlets & Lecture Notes” section.
It is from the astonishing new Persi Diaconis book, “Magical Mathematics: The Mathematical Ideas that Animate Great Magic Tricks.” Do not let the notion of heavy math throw you off – the book is a marvel and the opening effect (Royal Hummer) kills. A few days ago, a very good friend did it to a colleague of mine, over the phone. This was a brilliant hands-off variation of the effect described in the book. My work colleague was stunned. She is still wondering how she dealt herself a Royal Flush when it was a borrowed deck, she did the shuffling, she made a number of her own choices and the freaking Magician wasn’t even in the room!
