In attending a baseball game recently I noticed guys with big bags at their sides containing their balls. Realized these would make good busking pouches. So I did some some googling and found out they are called umpire bags. They are fairly cheap on most sites and could be a great alternative to expensive leather magicians pouches. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these are a great find for the poor magician.

I used to have a bag, that wasn't the best, but when I could afford it I stepped up to gazzos' pouch.
You'll hear a lot of comment about this n that pouch, and there are some good ones out there, but for my money, banging them out hard core, his pouches last and last and last. Not saying others wouldn't, but for my ( now Gazzos') money his pouch is reeeeealy good, and will carry on being so for many years to come. The umpire pouches, I did google it but came up with butkis, only some designs I couldn't see as workable. I believe, buy what you can afford, but asap invest and invest in your success... James |

Frank, at "The Ambitious Card" also sells the Cellini pouch which is made the way Cellini originally made it. It's also "top quality!" http://www.theambitiouscard.com/aitem.cfm?itemid=1

I just looked it up and they are umpire ball bags. Look up umpire equipment.
They look pretty flat. This wouldn't be good for cups and balls, but might be okay to carry other materials/tricks. One bag that I used to use for a chop cup was a shot gun shell bag. I had one in a light brown suede. Worked pretty well. But a Gazzo bag works best for cups and balls. The reason being that it retains the shape.

Ya obviously top of the line is best. Unfortunately I can only afford so much. Wouldn't have done it if I had found these ball bags before however. Sir Richard I own an ambtiouscard buskers pouch. I think it is quite durable and I love the pockets on it. Not the largest but I don't need anything huge like I first thought I would want. The only down side to its durability is the inner cloth lining. I can see this tearing and coming undone over the years. Even worse though after my purchase and even creating a homemade servante I have realized I don't even need either. I could have future uses though. Anyway EVILDAN they do seem flat but I think you could still use them for c&b's. Add a stiff inner linning like a pocket or leather bag withought handles if there is such a thing without buying a magicians or tool pouch that always seem too small. Aside from those bags though. You mention shot gun shell bags. I am assuming this is another name for a powder bag. I have seen these at Cabela's and they looked like a great alternative but I wanted something bigger and got my buskers pouch. Makes me recall something I saw at Michaels though. Plastic bags with leather cord and leather hide for making something. The bag didn't really say what it was and much of it was in French which I can't comprehend. Next time I'm there I should ask what the stuff is. Perhaps it's to make a leather handbag or something that can be modified into a pouch.

I'm not sure what a powder bag is, but as a former Skeet shooter, a shotgun shell bag is usually a stiff leather pouch that carries at least enough shells for one round or more of Skeet (25 shots) The bag is usually sized to take a complete box so you only have to remove the top off the box and you're ready to go. It also can have a divider so you can stash your empties if you plan to reload them, or just for neatness sake rather than have them drop to the ground and have to police them up later.
Shooter pouches can be as plain or as ornate as you want them to be and for some it's a point of pride to have a fancy pouch on your hip. They're not as big or as functional as a Gazzo pouch, but unless you're doing the whole six orange and melon routine, you may find one that works for you. After spending the money on three or four failed attempts to find the "perfect pouch" at a hundred bucks a pop, you may decide too late that starting with the Gazzo pouch is probably the best deal after all. His hand laced ones are pricey, but the stitched ones are about half the price and unless you work as hard as Gazzo, they should still last you a lifetime of average use.

An alternative, which I have seen seldom mentioned is........make your OWN pouch from leather.
Ja Ja I know, it's going to take a heck of a lot of time, effort and money.....but if any of you lot are in for the long haul and wanna be top notch, then learn how to make your OWN pouch to fit your needs. Side of leather going to cost you a couple hundred dollars/hundred fifty Euros plus punch, awl, etc plus the time which will be lots before you get it down. So you won't really save any money but......you'll be able to make exactly what you need/require for the rest of your life in magic, assuming you'll stay with it. And the great thing is, when you're finally get real good at it.....you can make and sell your pouches. |

May not have been called a powder bag can't remember the exact name. However it wasn't what you just told me about. Which was quite informative as always. Thanks Dave V

Not just on supplies either, I would probably need to spend some on leather working classes and books. Though I do want to buy myself an awl for modifying my servante. I could also use it for other things in the future I'm sure.

I find I like my Servant as much if not more than my Pouch.
Like everything it depends what you do and how you want to do it. The thing that's nice is that my servante carries my gear and I bought it for $25 at Canadian Tire and it attaches to my table with velcro straps... my pouch cost me considerably more. d

I have one of the hand tooled Orvis pouches. It is the “basket weave” design. Yes I originally got it for skeet shooting (got to kill those steets or they tend to over populate the environment!). I found early on that they looked good with my renaissance fair costume and held the final loads I was using nicely. While not cheap it proved for me to be double duty.

http://reviews.containerstore.com/1626/1......iews.htm Found some like these at wallmart today but with outer pockets. The hooks could be used for hankercheifs and scarfs when through with them. So as not to have them in the way during future uses of the pouch. Otherwise I would imagine removing the hooks. The pouch is rather small but could work for certain situations. It's a shame how we find cheaper alternatives after we have blown money on other things. Oh well this a great discussion for others that are looking for a cheap alternative and haven't blown there money yet.

The beauty of leather pouches isn't just esthetics. Part of the reason leather is chosen as it holds it's shape whether it's full or empty. Fabric just doesn't do it as well.
I'm not saying it won't work, I just know from experience that you can spend a lot of money trying and failing before you realize that something like the Gazzo pouch would have saved you a lot of hassle (and money) if you bought it in the first place.
