This may be old news to most but for a newbie I found it useful.
I purchased The Compleat Invocation recently ( 900 pages ) at the recommendation of various threads in this forum. As stated by several people it's a must have book for Bizzare magic. I was checking my book suppliers catalog and noticed Compleat Invocation vol 3 in his list. After a phone call I acertained that originally Invocation & New Invocation were printed in 3 volumes. My book supplier stated that he "belived" when The Compleat Invocation was published it contained all 3 volumes. After checking threads here & digging around on the web I dicovered that vol 3 is not included in the Compleat Invocation. The Compleat Invocation ends at NI issue 36. Vol 3 picks up at issue 37 and continues on to issue 61. This was confirmed with my book supplier. As stated this may be old news but I thought I would mention it for the newbies like myself |

I've seen "The Compleat Invocation" quoted as a must have book for those interested in bizarre magic, but, I'm not too clear what range of material it actually contains.
(essays, effects, interviews?) Am I right in saying that it is a good resource and an "ideas catalyst"/inspiration for those developing bizarre presentations? Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Stevie. |

Greetings,
I love this zine. In the forward Max Maven rightly says most of the material in the mag was crap. It can't be performed in any real situation. the methods are dubious. The presentations are long-winded. He also points out, the Invocation was an inspired experiment and deserving of accolades for what it attempted. You will read it and laugh aloud, your imagination will race, and you'll start hunting immediately for the remaining issues. In it you'll find much gothic bizarre magic, some mentalism, some essays, book/product reviews of items that are for the most part no longer available. Personally, I love the story format for each effect. They make the book hard to put down! Take Care, Sam Haine

It's a great collection for people who want to do mentalism, as well as those into bizarre magick. You really get an insight into the thinking of the leading figures within bizarre magick. The sheer wealth of material is vast - and I agree that it's a great read (in contrast to so many dry magic and mentalism texts) with wonderful, atmospheric illustrations. As Eugene Burger frankly points out in his introduction, it's probably not particularly "commercial" in the sense of getting booked to perfom at corporate events, but I'm so inspired by it that I feel like putting on a bizarre magick show at my own expense purely for the fun of it.
Interesting to learn that there was a third volume of Invocation. I hope that they produce the third volume as a separate book. |

It was produced and does exist. I know, I own it and it was produced by Kaufmann.

The 900 pg edition is out of print but I would pay a pretty penny for a copy. Anyone?

I purchased a copy of the big 900 pager from Richard Kaufman just a few weeks ago. Go to his website and send an email to see if any copies are still remaining.

FYI, aside from Volume 3 there is yet another group of issues 62-83 that were never published in a volume and probably never will be. A few lucky collectors have this set :-D
All in all, any of these books will possess you and deliver you into the clutches of the dark, and you will go with a smile. They are joy and a wealth of creativity. The effects are delivered in "presentational atmosphere", a kind of unique creation of giving the "effect" as an engaging story instead of just stating it blandly as is the normal mode for magic effects. This is a unique part of the Bizarre genre.
