Seems like I keep buying all kinds of really cool close-up cases.
Most are womens make-up boxes, found in places like Pennys, Wal-Mart and the like. I have a smaller one I really use a lot, has compartments and such. Anyone else use these cases? Or maybe you've found something better?

As some know, I am a case freak! I have cases for everything from a deck of cards to a big one on wheels that I can put almost everything I own into. One good place to look is at thrift stores, you can find alot of cool cases of different sizes.

Ichazod is correct when he says thrift stores often have a lot of cool items we magicians can use. Magic shops don't have it all!
And by the way, that case on wheels Ichazod mentioned could probably hold Copperfields entire act!!

A great case is found at Lowes (the buildings materials store). It is a metal case that has foam inserts and runs about $20.00. The name escapes me right now but it's something like Work Force or something like that. Also I have a smaller size close-up case I got from a camera store. Perfect for intimate settings. I think it ran $27. You pay more because it's a specialty case. Go figure.

I was at my first magic convention when, in the dealer room, one of the dealers hands me a black suitcase with the name "The Great Eugeni" I painted over it and still use it for my kids show.

My favorite case that I've ever even seen is one that Hank Lee markets, The Doctor Bag Case. It is a modified old-fashioned traveling doctor bag. Only thing I don't like is the price.....

If you all don’t mind I am going to let my wife read this topic…She thinks I am insane (ok that opinion might not just have to do with this topic) because of my…mmm, fascination with cases.
But, if it’s doctor’s bags your looking for I know the best places to pick them up. I should say I like the weather old doctor backs. New Zealand. That’s the place. I was there for just over a month and every town I went to, and I went to a lot, had thrift stores, and in every thrift store I found at least one Doctor’s bag. The couple I ended up buying cost me, drum roll please….$5 each. These bags are in great shape; I guess there is just no real interest in them over there. If you cannot make it to New Zealand, I have purchased some really cool bag/cases on ebay. I think I had better stop talking about bags and cases before I prove my wife right. I know guys like to pack their whole prop collection when they head off to a show. I like to take only what I might use. That means for strolling I pack an old 6"x4"x4" cigar box and that is it. I walk in with this cool little box and people are intrigued. That is, the organizers. The box is not used in the show. It hides just about anywhere.
I leave a few specialty items in the car in case a larger venue option "occurs". I used to ride a motorcycle to shows (mostly for appearance and parking sake) so I got very in touch with packs small plays big. Fits in with the whole magic is about the performance, not the prop concept. Tom Cutts |

Cases! Oh no! Like you guys I have a ton of em' But most of my work is stand up. Right now I am using two cases and a portable table. Way to much. I would love to cut that down. I did a show last November with TC Tahoe (the Radisson in Orange County, TC) and he did an amazing show out of one doctors bag. I just can't seem to get there yet. Martin Lewis and Aldo also use the same type of bag for their whole show.
My current favorite case is a large metal video camera case. Well padded and fits my multi bottles plus most of rest of the show. For a 20 minute show I think that I could use a smaller case. But most of my shows are 1 hour shows and I just need soooo much stuff! I have been thinking about one of those large suitcase tables for my kid shows. Those seem like they would work well. Anyone use them? They seem nice because they hold the props upright and ready to go. I would love to hear from anyone who has used one. God bless America's victims and their families.
Thank you,

For the transport of the close-up stuff, I use the doctor bag. When moving from table to table, I use a modified Top Hat Table Caddy style thingy...
For stand-up work, I use a nightclub table and a trash can with casters mounted on the bottom. The can is hidden behind the table until I am ready to dump the first item. Once brought into view, it gets a great laugh... |

I use one of the twenty dollar aluminum tool suitcases we have here at local Home Depot stores. I remove the tool thing in the lid and pack a flat piece of sheet foam in its place to close down over the compartments in the case. This keeps everything in place, even if the case goes upsidedown. The aluminum skin on this case is thin and dents easily.
For just the stuff I use in the restaurant, I use a sample of an Anvil ATA case I got from the manufacturer. It's lined all around with foam so it will protect it's contents even if it falls out of my car on the freeway. For my kid's shows, I use the Steve Taylor setup; a thirty dollar trunk/footlocker from Target sitting on a restaurant tray stand. For a table, I converted an eighteen dollar drum cymbal stand to screw into a flange mounted on a square of plywood that fits into the lid of the trunk. |

I got a tool box/case at Home Depot for about $10 US. It can be partitioned off in various ways to accomodate most anything and everything I need for a particular show.I ran across it on the Collected Wisdom of Magic Talkhttp://people.cs.uchicago.edu/~alain/magictalk-wisdom/discussions/cheap_close_up_cases.htmlDon't know if I can attach a picture that was on Magic Talk but I'll try. If it doesn't work go to the link and a picture is there.

Hey, I thought I was the only one who used the "doctor's bag" style tool kit from the truck stops. They come in 2 (at least) colors, and are extremely durable. Zipper across the top. Put in a piece of foam with slits for props, and you've got it...and for around $15. I've been using one for about 10 years now. I bought 5 of 'em when I found 'em.

I too, have tons of cases. I have one of the truck stop Dr. bags--very nice. I also sometimes use catalog-style briefcases. For my platform shows its a suitcase table. I have lots of briefcases and toolkit cases, a couple of makeup cases (all found at Costco, Home Depot, and Office Depot), the Mac Magic close-up case, and my favorite--an antique silverware case.
