Fishing tackle boxes are the way to go. The boot of my car has one that's a first aid box, one with tools and the latest, one for my magic tricks - no there isn't one for fishing. The latest is one of the Plano range with interchangeable insert cases. The inserts come in two thicknesses, 1.5" which I use for coins, and "little" items, and a thicker one for cups and balls, multiple card packets, and assorted bits and pieces. The nice bit is that the inserts store separately, so you can pick which ones you need for a particular gig.

For those English speakers among us, I believe the "boot" of the car is what we call the trunk.

James, don't you mean truck=lorrie and trunk = boot? Sorry, just thought I get that clarified.

I use a cheap tackle box that I got at WalMart to store my props at home, then when I go out to do tricks on the street I have a very thin and very light alluminum briefcase that I got at staples. I then use it as a table ontop of the rolling stand thingy I have.

I use a nice black case I got while from a ladies hair style school. They use them for rollers, blow dryer, clips, etc. to carry around. They are really cheap and look great. Plus the handle is on the top and in the middle. It is about 15"x9 1/2"x9". I customised it myself with a sliding drawer in the top, but is great fot carry C&B, chop cup, plus loads.

While in a waiting room read through Dec. 2003 issue of "Popular Photography". Great bags available. I saw an ad for a specially designed tuxedo vest for wedding photographers. It was black with satin trim and all sorts of pockets for carrying lenses (cups and balls), film (thumb tip)...

What I use is small but very reliable. It's a case used to hold decks of cards and poker chips. They sell these in most gaming stores and even sometimes stores like The Discovery Channel. I got mine at a store called Gamer's Paradise. They're quite thin but it holds pretty much every effect I do. Inside the case it can hold four decks and there are 6 rows for poker chips. Luckily you can take out some of the barriers to make the spaces wider, which is what I did. But lately I've been looking to get a nice sized breifcase (similar to the one that Gary Kurtz has in his videos). If I got one of these then I would attach a close up pad which is good for table hopping.

Well, I skipped page 2, and skimmed page 3, so I probably missed my favorite, which is the Shaklee/Amway type sample case.
Is this a bad thing? I am starting to believe that there's something amiss here. It is the perfect size, fits the carry-on criteria for airlines. What am I missing? I feel like I am the only person driving into a town that Godzilla's trashing, while everyone else is leaving . So C'mon what am I missing? They are great cases, and cheap at the Flea Markets & Thrift stores. They're even compartmented. Is this some type of social "Faux Pas" . Will somebody please clue me in. Thanks Steve |

Thankfully, I've been investigating these for a while now, and with the advice of Jeff Pinsky, have decided that to get what I truly want, I would most likely have to build it on my own. Having a father in law who is a professional carpenter, I have access to tools and knowledge that most people wouldn't, which means I can ask him to help me with the plans, etc, and he will help me build it for a small charge. (I can't ask him to do it for free now can I) How did this turn out David? Dave

I bought a brand new with tags briefcase today at a thrift store and it fits my linking rings, multiple decks of cards, all my close up effects etc. I really like it because of the combo locks on it.

I have every case known to man.
I've got a doctor's bag someplace, a rolling craft case (current), several $20 Huskys (in all the colors), a few aluminum tackle boxes (aka make-up cases), Vaults everywhere. . . On a side note, you know this thread has spanned almost 8years?

I think one of the first times I saw a magician I was most impressed by his case, it was in the old Disney movie Bed Knobs and Broom Sticks. We first see Professor Emelius Browne about to set up his street show and hustle both on the highs ways and byways of war time england. He had a steamer trunk with had automatic extending legs, shelves that rose up and a sign that flipped out. It looked as if the whole thing was one giant clock work machine. Of course it was ll done with stop motion camera trickery, but still a very cool case indeed.

As I'm on a budget I've adapted an IKEA fabric treasure chest to hold all my kids show props. The kids seem to love a magician with a treasure chest, especially at pirate shows. It easily fits into the car. All of my smaller props fit into a freebie that used to hold six packets of biscuits. It's transparent so I can spot my props.
As the treasure chest is fabric, it's lightweight. The only draw-back is it can't hold my things on planes as it's not solid enough. So I undo the zip on the bottom and it folds into my sailing bag with all my props. Then at the other end of the journey I zip it back together. Often my clients think I must be a real magician if I've traveled with it all the way from kuwait. I just smile sweetly.

Thanks Dustin,
and at only 4.5 Kd (less than $20). I'm going to bring it to the UK and USA (FCM at Marion), packed flat then zip it up to go to gigs.

I use a make up bag that came in a luggage kit my wife got for Christmas. It is the best close up care I have ever had, the only problem is it is bright red.
