I found in my basement an old Dean Dill (still available at http://www.DeanDill.com) Red Sponge Cubes to Red Sponge Cross trick. Very nicely made (Goshman style), but the instructions that came with it back then were as clear as mud. I remember Duane Laflin had a VCR out teaching this trick years ago (and he sold the set as well). If I remember the presentation, the performer "appears" 4 sponge cubes in his right hand, then places them one at a time into his left hand between each of his fingers. At the conclusion of the trick, the left hand is opened- the individual sponges are gone and between the fingers are the "points"/ends of the appearing sponge cross. Am I imagining this? Although I can do an adequate finger thumb palm vanish, etc., I have no clue where the individual 4 sponges were to eventually end up- and the instructions do not mention this in any way. I know we generally do not discuss/expose "methods" here on The Magic Café', but I would appreciate any directions here or where I can find the proper routine. It may be just a figment of my imagination too, maybe the sponge cross routine does not procede in that fashion at all- who knows- but it would be nice to be able to do the above though if possible. The four cube sponges are too large to fit in a thumb tip I'm pretty sure.

There's a video clip on the Laflin Magic Store website, of David performing a sponge cross routine. The handling is different from what you are describing, but I thought you'd be interested in it.

Thanks Donald- the above is more of an illustration with no manipulation involved. The one routine I remember seeing done by a high schooler was a fooler- the individual sponges were placed into the closed fist- then pulled out between the fingers seemingly- only to find out later they had magically fused into the sponge cross. The patter he had with it was excellent also. I wish I had the old Laflin VCR tape on it (used to be advertised in his old "Seeing the Truth" magazine).

I didn't take the time to click on the link that Donald provided, but I recently bought this set from David's online store. Duane also demonstrates this on his Art Of Gospel Magic DVD set, I believe on the third volume, but am not sure. There is no manipulation involved in that particular routine that he does on that DVD. If I remember correctly, he has both sets of "cubes" in his hands, and asks the spectator to pick a hand. He forces which set to use, and goes from there.
Looks like something to ask him at FCM in Marion that is now just around the corner! By the way, I would love to see your version of Dean's Box when you are table hopping there at FCM. Sorry to change the subject, I have a Dean's Box as well, but don't have it mastered. Doug |

I love Dean's Box- just a great trick. Takes some practice and some guts to do it- but it is a real fooler. I personally think it is one of the classics of magic.

Believe it or not, the high school kid who I originally saw do the cube/cross trick on a missions trip video has an open house for his HS graduation this Saturday night. He is going into the Marines this Fall. He knows our family/my youngest son and we got an invitation to attend his party. I think I will tag along and briefly ask him if he could show it to me what he did on the video (which was shown in his church as part of their report what happened on their youth group trip to Haiti-I just happened to see it that particular Sunday- I attend another church- Lighthouse Community Church- in Kalamazoo).
Soooo..., anyway, I'll find out... he may have used a large thumb tip, I do not know... Who knows, he may have come up with something totally new that no one has done with that trick before- but it fooled me when I first saw it. I'm going to ask him about his patter too but I thought it was really good at the time how he tied it all together. Kinda like Dai Vernon in search of the perfect shuffle cut or whatever... |

Thanks for the video link - It is more an object lesson than magic, but there is absolutely nothing at all wrong with that.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.
