The world of PCB hobby boards has advanced a lot in last 3 years. If you have a little knowledge then to make a system like the VSM would only cost a fraction,
1./ You need a contoller: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9715 ($29)
2./ You need a wireless remote: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8665 ($22)
3./ You need an MP3 player: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9715 ($49)

I know where I started looking at the problem there wasnt a lot of options. There are many projects using these type of ready made PCB (printed curcuit boards) on the net.

Just though I'd start a discussion.

I've thought a lot about this myself. You're right, it's pretty simple these days. For about $100.00US you can do this and it would have all the functionality of what you can do with a laptop. (Incidentally, I've actually met the Sparkfun people at the Bay Area Maker Faire, where they teach kids to solder. Great group of people and a great company!) A few comments...

Your link to the controller is actually to the MP3 player, so that you've got two links to the same thing. Can you fix this? I suspect you're linking to an Arduino board.

You're also missing a part - an RF remote in your pocket. The XBee is just the receiver. As an alternate, one of these units could work, if paired with the right micro-controller: http://www.mdfly.com/index.php?main_page......nrqiotl4

Similar units to this are available on the big auction site and at many other online sources.

This is so simple to do that it could be whipped together in a weekend when you had the right parts - with more functionality than an iPod with a wireless remote.

Yeh, sorry, I was linking trying to an adruino - you can get one for only 10USD now from ebay and I realised the Xbee was without a remote. You can get pretty good UHF remotes now for quite cheap (thats what wireless wizard use). Well lets keep this post going in the future and see what we can come up with.

Heres an easier MP3 player to use: http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=p......t_id=446
Only $24 and include the code for the arduino (if used with a PC). I am re-building my robot, if I have time, I will try and put one together,

That MP3 player looks OK, but it's only got the most basic commands. You can't tell it to play a specific file, for example. I think the most important commands are the same ones that I figured out years ago for a laptop - "Play next file then pause" and "Stop and fade out."

However, there's a lot of this stuff out there, keep looking and you'll probably turn up something nearly as good as the Sparkfun board but for less.

Which Arduino do you like for $10.00?

The Ardiuno Uno would be fine ($15). Even that is probably overpowered for something like the controlling an MP3 driver. I think this simple player would work fine. Yeh no playlists and stuff I guess, but with the cost of SD card e.t.c you could just have a different show on each SD card. Most performers I know only have like 2 different play lists they use(contrary to some ppl on here who seem to have 50 shows).
