Hey guys,

I already own In the Beginning There Were Coins by Jay Noblezada.
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/1581

Do you think Metal by Eric Jones would be a good addition or too similar to the above?

It would be a great addition. Metal is a fantastic DVD and you will learn many things not taught on In the Beginning,

Eric Jones: Metal is the best DVD for beginning coin magic.
but also experienced magicians can learn a lot from Eric Jones, his unique and relaxing way to manipulate coins.
I see my metal often to learn and relearn my movements.

Unfortunately I can not find any of his DVDs in the country (denmark)

but obviously you need to get in bobo's modern coin magic book, it belongs in every coin magician bookshelf.

I don't own In the beginning there where coins but Eric's dvd is fantastic. Except from the sleights, the concealments and the routines that he teaches he is giving also great advise for the beginner. It's a very good choice.

Another strong endorsement for Metal. Great material covered and very clear teaching style.

I don't have "In the beginning", so I can not fairly say which.

But I do second Bobo's; that book has taken me a long way.

I highly recommend Metal to any newcomer to coins. Eric has a vast knowledge coins, and is a great teacher. He will break everything down to easy learning steps. And provide additional tips and tricks to further help you in your magic. I have not seen Jay's DVD, so I can't really give a fair review.

I own both of them. In fact I started coin magic with Jay's In the Beginning There Were Coins. Let me do a brief comparison between the two:

Volume of Sleights:
In the Beginning: Standard palmings, vanishes
Metal: Standard (but more) palmings, (more) vanishes, production, sleeving

Routines:
In the Beginning: Tenkai pennies, one coin routine, coins across, coin thru table, a signed coin transposition from spectator's hand to yours, coin bending
Metal: 3fly, coins across, spellbound, loose change transposition

Flourishes:
In the Beginning: coin roll
Metal: Coin rolldown, 5 coin star, arm roll

In my opinion, Eric Jones explained the techniques better. Both contain some interesting routines; I like the signed coin transposition, coin thru table and coins across from Jay's, and I like 3fly, coins across and the loose change transposition from Eric's.

So in terms of learning magic, Metal is slightly better because of the quantity of materials in there. However I have to say Jay talks more about his attitudes/appreciation to coin magic, which is, I believe, as important as techniques when it comes to practising/performing magic.

You joined the Café, posted 14 times in 1 hour and haven't been back since. All of your posts consisted of 3 or 4 words (eg."Anyone else tried this?" "Any updates or reviews? Looks great!" "Where's the best deal on this?" "Does anyone have a link to this?") and then you start this topic. people post to offer you help and you don't even come back to look. What gives?

If you guys don't mind, rather than plugging my DVD, I'd like to take a moment to plug the video that started ME on MY journey through coin magic. It was Michael Ammar's Introduction To Coin Magic. Anything I have learned about being a decent teacher of magic I learned from watching guys like Daryl and Michael Ammar. I encourage you to take some time and revisit this video if you already have it, or pick it up if you're not familiar. Sure, this video was filmed in the 90's, but the information is just as reliable and relevant today as it was then.

Yes, I pointed out the very same thing on another thread. All of his posts are more or less the same thing limited to a very few words as you pointed out, but you missed a few which were; "May have to pick this one up". Obviously he never bothers to return to the threads he posted on and it would seem, for some unfathomable reason which is beyond me, simply looking to increase his post count as quickly as possible. He made those first 14 posts in one hour on the day he joined! Go figure. Smile

Since "In The Beginning..." and "Metal" were specified, I'll jump in and say that I own both and while both have merit and are a good value for the money, I highly recommend "Metal."

...There. I addressed the specific question that was first posted. Now, with that said, I'm going to second Eric's statement and suggest Michael Ammar's "The Complete Introduction To Coin Magic." Michael is a very good teacher of magic.

Back on track, I agree with Eric Jones that the oldies are the goodies. David Roths DVD set is a goldmine and should be in the collection of any serious coin worker.

all the best
