I had the chance to review Metal for the SAM's magazine M-U-M. The summative paragraph of the review:
You can get a four volume DVD set that covers everything in Bobo’s Modern Coin Magic, or you can spend half as much money for this one DVD with six tricks on it. I recommend you buy the one DVD. You’ll learn more that’s worth knowing. Eric is a charming performer, a good teacher, and an excellent magician. Get this. |

You'll learn more that's worth knowing from Metal than you will from a 4 DVD set covering everything in Bobos? How do you work that one out?

However to say that Metal has more that's worth knowing is a bit of an overstatement. Don't get me wrong I think Eric Jones is a great teacher a talented magician. However, I would consider Metal as a good complimentary DVD to Bobo's for the extra subtitles, finesses and theory. |

I'd recommend Ammar's 'Introduction' DVD and Bobo's book. Bobo is essential, but it's also essential with coin magic to have a visual complement to the often awkward text. (Though I don't recommend the 4-DVD version: the single DVDs put it all together better.)
I have, and recommend, 'In the Beginning' but I don't have 'Metal'. It looks great, though, and these recommendations is pushing it up my wish list. (Though I have to admit that I have more fun with coin gaffs!) |

I purchased "In the Beginning..." and really love the DVD. Jay is a great teacher and has some goo practical stuff on his DVD. It is excellent. I do not own "Metal"... but no doubt excellent as well. The Godfather, Vinny Marini and his buddies, Marion Boykin and Tim Feher have some really wonderful work-able tricks and routines on Vinny's website. Check those guys out! They have been a SUPER help to me!

On Jun 24, 2011, Eric Jones wrote: This is an old post, but still a good one…most old things are. Of the last 5-10 years, I would suggest Eric Jones’ Metal series. It is a pretty complete piece of work on the subject, and he show’s you how all the way through. It is in the mold of all the good old instruction on this part of magic, and he constantly reminds you that it all comes from somewhere, that somebody came up with and or built upon whatever it is to bridge itself to this day. And that’s why I reposted here his words, because he realizes that it’s not all about him but the journey. He mentions Ammar here instead of his works, and I can vouch for it as I too (and no doubt many others) also learned a thing-or-two from its wonderful instruction. Look for the signs like this, that more inclusively point the way forward. Now, you could get a lot of things, lots of good stuff out there, but Metal is a good one covering all areas and taught in Eric’s more up to date and hip style of the art, IMHO. As videos have become the leading edge in better learning the art these days, I would say that Danny Goldsmith has put out a lot of refreshingly good stuff over the years but more as downloads. And don’t sleep on the downloads, some are quite excellent. And that goes for YouTube as well. Yeah, there’s a lot of junk up there but there’s a lot of, as my old friend DOC useta say when as kids we would rummage around the backyards for old bike parts, “good garbage” up there as well. Check out Doug Conn’s work, a stellar closeup guy that is as good with coins as any of the best out there. Plus, he’s a great teacher and shows you the way on some pretty good things. And before I leave here, I want to also suggest something that at the time, there wasn’t much hoopla about but it is quite good with a lot of approachable (not difficult) work redone by a unique closeup worker. Ahhhh, the roads less traveled…Check out Benjamin Earl’s Unreal Coin Magic. I was late to the table on that one myself. Some wonderful stuff in there with great explanation. It’s the kind of magic you walk around and can do anywhere on the spot. He’s pretty darn good with cards too, but that’s another story. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents, and welcome to this part of the Cafe.

I love Eric's work. The metal series, his Copeland coin lecture, at the table talk. All great. He teaches moves well and explains things carefully. They cover some of the same ground, but it's sometimes useful seeing slight variations. The routines are nice clear routines. It's easy to make coin routines that are too fast and confusing for spectators, but I find Eric's routines are good and the few I've learnt are getting good reactions. I learnt a lot of sleights from the Roth material, but many of the routines are table based, whereas much of Eric's have been standing, which I reckon more people find themselves doing these days.
I've paid for the new Copeland beginners guide with their last Kickstarter. Interested to see what that covers. |

My bad…I meant to say above, “Real” Coin Magic by Benjamin Earl. It’s actually his card magic that is “Unreal.”
And again, he does some good stuff in about only an hour or so of instruction. So it wont wear you out, and is easy to follow. Now, Ben does a lot of psychological stuff and has added some of that sorta thinking to these coin effects. It works rather well together for some amazing magic.

I think the most important question is what you're trying to learn and what experience you have.
Danny's work is fantastic, but I find it's slightly more geared at the intermediate magician. He has great routines and teaching, but each one tends to be focused on a particular theme. I'd say the same thing about most of the Copeland content (aside from the new beginner's guide, which isn't out yet). On the other hand, some work like Metal, Ammmar's coin series, Rubinstein's Encyclopedia of Coin magic tend to cover a very broad range of sleights and concepts that can serve as a great introduction/ramp up on material. There's also a couple of video version of Bobo (a Magic Makers one with Ben Salinas, and one more recently on Reel Magic with Curtis Kam). Or if books are more your speed, there have been some excellent books in the intervening years - but I know you specifically asked about videos. |

Thank you for mentioning the Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights. Originally filmed in Germany in 1985, sold to Videonics as a 7 part series, bought by L&L who made them into a 3 dvd set (the routine videos were left out), this set contains over 100 coin moves, all topical, on all phases of coin magic from palms, to loads and steals, to vanishes, shuttle passes, changeover palms, and so much more. People always go for the next newest thing, but these have stood the test of time, with professionals like Bertini and Reed McClintock getting their start from learning off these dvds. Now available as downloads from many dealers through Murphys (vanishinginc, etc). No bad reviews ever on this set, you can look it up!

I like both Eric’s “Metal” DVDs and Michael’s “Encyclopedia” DVDs. They are complementary and excellent additions to one’s library.
I will also mention Kainoa Harbottle’s “Coins 101” series on ReelMagic. Great teaching of basic and intermediate sleights, and good routines that utilize the sleights taught in each lesson. This is a series I wish was available on DVD. |

Wasn't the question "In the Beginning vs. Metal?"
There's a whole thread dedicated to beginner tutorials and opinions how to start. If there's anything helpful to add, that's where future searchers will find it the quickest. Just my idea |

Yes, but the recent question was:
I know I’m a bit late (10 years) to this thread but have there been any more landmark coin magic teaching videos since then? Perhaps that should have been in a different thread, but none of the responses since then have been inappropriate. |

On Jun 30, 2024, tonsofquestions wrote I didn't say that. I just said that it's easier to find them there. This forum is full of good tips that you stumble across without having looked for them. The search function is not the best and it can be a bit confusing at times. Any new information that is off topic but would be good under a different heading may help in this case, but will not to visible in future searches. Just an idea how to make the secrets of this forum a little more accessible. No offense. |

Your comment was
> Wasn't the question "In the Beginning vs. Metal?" Which sounded like a criticism of the recent responses. I agree the recent bump would have been better asked in the other thread, yet here we are. |

If that's the case, I'm sorry. Everyone can post what they want, of course.
However, the same information is worth more in the right place. When, for example, Copeland material is discussed. Which beginner will find this information here? He will look in the thread at the top of the forum, where beginner material is the main topic. I just wanted to point this out before the thread deviates even further from the original question. |

I commented about my set here, even though that wasn't the topic. Frankly, every beginner and intermediate book and dvd is already posted in the beginner section, many times over, as well as in other threads. I commented here because my name was mentioned, and because of the direct question (which meant to me that the reader wasn't familiar with other beginning coin sleight sets). My set predated both of those, and is better IMHO. But there are also other good beginner dvds, like the Roth Easy to Master Coin Magic, Ammar's set, Ben Salinas's Bobo dvd, and others. Each has something to offer. I think referring the poster to another thread is dismissive. I hope people with knowledge of the contents of the ones he is curious about will continue to comment, as well as people who have learned from other sources.
