"Finally if I were to contemplate doing such a show I wouldn't want to perform something off the shelf, what would be the point the effects are too well known in the circle."
Yes but as you have to use something to achieve the effect, if it is not an off the shelf trick, then you would probably be using one or more of the fundamental principles of mentalism. - What would be worst: Blowing one off the shelf trick that audiences would just associate with that one trick or tip some mentalism essentials that are used in 1000 of tricks? And once the audience learn a new thing (like 'Stooges') they will use that to explain and dismiss any and all tricks someone does.

Well there we have it! First up someone doing a 'bank Night' routine with mobile (cell) phones in envelopes and selection done by a die and P&T reveal it!
Wasn't that featured on a DVD by Max Maven? They got the mentalist!

I meant more from a competition point, ie if I wanted to win the competition I wouldn't go with something off the shelf.

Well, they are consistent if nothing else! Bang goes the Max Maven effect I was gonna use in an upcoming show. Thanks to P & T it's secret has been revealed! Again I find myself surprised at the winning turn. Okay, so you say a high diamond card, and they are ***** something missing? I find it hard to believe that these two didn't know what was going on. Anyway, it's over now - we can but look forward to next week!

I actually really LOVED that episode! I thought it was awesome!
Having said that, I think that's probably because I would never use such a dice effect.

Its not effexcts that are being exposed its MENTALISM. They obviously hate mentalists. But don't underestimate the public's ability to put two and two together and start to think ALL mentalism is a trick. Because that's what will be happening. The more this is seen the more people will realise that mentalism is all fake.

Are you not Skeptical Thomas of the format of the show? i.e. our friends P & T have to be seeen to be fooled at least once per show, therefore, they put through a turn that they think will cut the mustard in Vegas. It has nothing to do with being fooled!

I don't think they are faking being fooled at all. Michael Bich totally fooled me, and I think he fooled them too. I do believe they have a policy of exposing atleast one trick per episode though, it just boosts ratings.

So can only assume the first few shows no one fooled them. |

I liked the way Matthew Bich anticipated them saying the box had more than 1 deck in by having the word 'NO' written in the bottom. That was a nice touch.

Three things occur to me.
1. Penn and Teller are not scum. They are very entertaining performers who have different views than some of the guys on here. 2. The format of the show will ensure that there is a certain amount of exposure most weeks, and someone will fool them most weeks - some act they choose to go to Vegas. Of course, they will not really be fooled. This is television; it is an illusion. 3. (The most important point) If performers have a problem with exposure, they have the option of not going on the show. It is their own choice. I have seen the version of smash and stab they exposed live, and it didn't fool me either.
