I think that is a beautiful vanish. Thanks for giving us a look.

That's very nice. It reminds me of a coin vanish Bob Blau used to do, but he tossed the coin back and forth a few times before he did the "work." Also, he did not use the wand.
There is a vanish that is on one of Alex De Cova's tapes, which I believe came from John Carney. Really deceptive. It fools my wife -- and she is the most critical of all.

Quote:
It is a great vanish because each time the spectator is sure he or she has seen the ball go into that hand only to have it appear under the cup. What I've found is that the interest in the vanish diminishes and moves to the appearance. Almost as though they have given up on how the ball vanishes, as it appears to be a given that it will, but how the heck does he get it to go into that cup? I wanted to just repeat this quote because I think it is so succinct. Have you thought of writing a whole book. Or should I just wait for little bits and pieces on this forum? |

Thanks for the kind comments on my vanish. It is actually a very poor clip of it, made with a cheap camera. I just wanted to demonstrate what I wrote up in a small book, that my friend Dan Strange and I put out about 13 years ago. Normally the wand is on the table, which gives the proper motivation for the vanish.
Thanks Ronnie Ramin |

Why don't you publish your book again, if it is not still available?

Bill,
Richard Hatch had a couple copies of it a while ago, I think he is probably out of them now though. I'm actually in the process of updating my routines from the book and putting to paper the new material I have come up with since then. At this point it is just an excercise so that I don't forget what I've worked up. Who knows... Thanks, Ronnie |

Ronnie,
Man, that looks good! I've been playing with your vanish since you sent me the write-up. Nice to see that I've been on the right track (although I don't have it down as smoothly as you yet!). Thanks for posting the video! Bob

The video clip sure looks easy but I can't do it.
I can't do the striking vanish well either. Several of you are speaking of "The Retention Vanish" with a ball. How does this compare/differ from the retention vanish of a coin? I watched the X-Files last night (the one with Ricky Jay doing cups and balls) and he does a pretty nice vanish. Anyone seen that? By the way, who was the other magician in that episode. [I have that episode permanently saved on my TIVO. Ahhhh] Frank

Frank,
I've never found the Striking Vanish to be deceptive. The problem is that the actual method coincides with what a spectator would guess the method to be. Ronnie |

The striking vanish also has severe angle problems. It looks great from the front but...
Actually, there is a variant of the striking vanish that still works. The ball is held at the heel of a palm down left fist. As the wand comes down, the left fingers open quickly and propel the ball to its destination much faster than it would otherwise go. Cheers, Doug

Ronnie,
That vanish is brilliant! I agree about using the striking vanish to vanish something. I often use it like a thumb tip or as an aquitment. I use it to get rid of something they do not know about or as a switch more than a magic trick in and of itself. I've been working on your vanish since you posted the clip and I just floored the heck out of one of my co workers with it. I'd like to use it in my cups routine if I can have permission. You should not call a false transfer a vanish. Because the ball does not vanish, from the spectators point of view. The ball vanishes when you open the hand to reveal the ball is gone.
I use the same false transfer all the time, although the vanish seems different. Just one thing to keep in mind. mmG Roland |

That is an excellent point Roland.

I will check the X-Files episode and report back.
Here's what's on the episode: Ricky Jay perfoming: - Cups and Balls (lots of camera cutting away tho). The only thing worth watching is the vanishes. - Waterfall Flourish Revelation of a playing card. Someone else performing: -Chink-A-Chink -Coin Roll Foourishes -One Coin Routine That's all I can remember. So who is that 'someone else'? Now a break for this brief commercial announcement... I knew the episode existed becasue I saw it on TV before. So this is how I got it recorded... I went to my TIVO, and typed in "RICKY JAY" and told it to record everything. One day, the episode appeared on my "Now Playing" list. I told TIVO to keep it forever and the rest is history. Now I can watch it in slo-mo, frame-by-frame, etc. Easier than a DVD. Go TIVO Go!!!

Was that the one where he mysteriously turned up dead (beheaded) in his van? Or was he on X-Files twice?
