OK..ok...ok.. I'm here rklew64. I have been thinking- "Man- look what I started". But- this is somewhtat what I was looking for- I just couldn't justify $95.00 for this. Now- don't get offened you bug spenders out there. I know- to each his own blah blah blah blah. I was just looking for some information (discussion) on this to help and see if I was missing something with this. And my friend Steve Hook says this to me in his one and ONLY post about this:
"2) If you don't think much of the effect, RNK, why keep posting about it? Are you hoping someone will talk you into liking it more??" I hope now he understands that a forum is for DISCUSSION as we are seeing. And YES Steve- the discussion in this forum has helped me make a decision! PS- Sponge Tennis BAlls- C'Mon- way too much for them. Haha LOL- kidding Take Care All! RNK

Awesome RNK, now that all that is out of the way, go make your own set or find a set of fake "real" jade bangles and have an great time, and spend or save the rest of the $90 on future anything - now you have this theoretical slush fund - how cool is that.
Your a good sport and a better sense of humor. Thanks |

Now I'm bummed, doesn't look like there will be a reason to push for a 4th page. One can only hope. Others love to discuss to ad nauseam on some topics. Heavy sigh. : (

REAL COOL! I think I just might do that rklew64! It's nice being able to chat with people that have a sense of humor as yourself. It seems a lot of magicians are too uptight! Not Good for the Soul!

The last conversation I had with Donald Trump, The Donald explained that he has done a lot of business with the Chineese and you have to watch out. They think that all Americans are stupid.
I didn't say that, he did. http://cgi.ebay.com/Pair-Natural-Green-J......b54b2cc4 Ray

With all the fake products and fake stores in China it's best to be leary making any purchases from China right now unless you know the dealer very well.
I tried to find out what kind of Jade Alan is selling, but he has not replied to my email. Perhaps he is extremely busy, but it would be nice to know more about the jade he is selling. Apparently there is a large amount of cheap jade or fake jade going around. Most dealers who sell real jade aknowledge the type of jade it is and the grade. Be very leary about those who are selling so-called "real jade", without giving further description, even the seller may not know they are not real. I've seen this for sale by another member here on the Café. He too claimed they were real, but I wonder if he knows that for sure, or is now caught up selling fake jades.

There's a section of town in my area that has a lot of stores that sell knock-off stuff - purses, watches, wallets, etc... Out of curiosity, I might drop by one and see if they have any of these jade rings.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I wish I was still in Korea. Same thng there. A lot of knock-offs. I am curious what jade goes for there? I have to give Alan credit. He is probably selling some of these, and he has us talking "now 4 pages" on here.. Nothing close to Jamie Grant's I.R.
Can't get mad at a guy for trying to make some $$$. Now, if it is Fake Jade, than I would have a HUGE problem with it. Thanks Dan for your insight to jade. I am actually in Afghanistan now. There is a bazzar near here that has jade for sale. I think it is jade?? Probably not, but I will look. I know he is selling tea cups, rocks and some other things that are "jade". I never asked how much. I will def. ask him. Hey, anyone want to buy a "jade" chop cup? $200 and free shipping from Afghanistan to your doorstep!! I kind of like how "we" are bringing back classic magic from the past like this. No way in heck will I buy this; but it was fun to watch the demo. I like the storyline. It shows that you can take a very simple method and create a much better effect than just a coin disappearing. Nothing earth shattering at all. This was fun... Thanks for an interesting thread. Hi-
I think this trick pre-dates Scarne, but I do not have a definitive source. I first saw it done some 50 years ago with a regular glass tumbler that was gimmicked for the effect by an ex-patriot German (he fled here during the war to escape persecution) and he was born circa 1920s. More recently, A bartender/magician I know of makes a "gimmick" impromptu, by using a napkin and the moistened rim of a glass. Those who know the workings of this effect will know what I am saying. I might add, this has always been a favorite trick of mine - without going into whether you pay a lot for it or make it up on your own. Of course, with the Scarne book, you also get hundreds of other very good tricks! I have seen many marketed versions of this effect, including packed in with beginner magic sets. I'd be very curious to find out where the original credit goes - it may very well be Scarne - I don't know. The first one I made was with some brass curtain rings I found at the hardware store, about 45 years ago! Best wishes- -Steve

I recently bought this item (need to wait for it to arrive). The price of it has dropped considerably the last few months (20 - 30 USD range, which makes it a bit of a let down when you bought this for the full price as a real 'collectors' item, which normally rises in price ...) which makes it affordable.
If you take into account everything you get (the rings, two velvet string bags, several coins, envelopes, hopefully a nice routine, ...) I think the price is a bit more justified then it was when the effect got released. You can still make your own for less, sure, but you'll have to put some time and effort into finding all the objects that come with it of course. I really like the effect (like most of us I have a cheap version I bought years ago), the 'special touch' Alan Wong added to one of the rings is pretty convincing if you ask me. I hope it will be the same quality as the Mini Pom Pom stick from Alan Wong that I have, which I love. Tiny, lovely, cute effects that are easy to do, I love those I'll post a small review once it gets here. |
