I put this here, because I'm looking for your theory and method for opening a
new deck of cards..That seal kills me.. Basically, how do you do it? I cannot open one with my thumbnail, no matter how I try.. You see guys like Ortiz, etc. open them with ease.. I have to use an x-acto knife.. ...

The problem is the new self stick labels. When they were gummed it was easier to get them open in any number of ways. I use a small pocket knife and then pull off the portion of the label that remains over the little cut out on the box lip or it will stick again to the flap.
You can take advantage of that by the way if you don't get rid of it.....you can have a card remain in the box and even though you hold the box upside down and shake it, etc. There's even a way to flash show the box empty... Best,

I guess a seal is meant to be broken not peeled off. Some people bang the conner on an hard surface before they strart. However I normally push across the back with the thumb and pull with finger at the face and the plastic pops open at the top and as for the seal I peel it up slowly at the front starting at the conner.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I cut mine with a kitchen knife so I don't get any sticky stuff on the cards.

Tommy is correct though. The 'new' self stick seals can actually be peeled off! If you want to do it so you can 'mess' with the cards and then reseal the deck it takes patience, etc. I use a little Swiss Army knife on my key chain to slit them open normally, but the peel and re-stick thing is very cool.
In the back of my mind there lurks the conviction that there is a way to get the seal to loosen up...it's not steam....maybe someone else would know what it is. Makes it easier to remove and replace, but I can't remember what it is. Best,

Steven Youell has a very dramatic and signature way of tearing into a pack of cards to start a set.
The box, however, cannot be used ever again.
