I assume wmhegbli is referring to The Life and Times of Albert Goshman, in which he named it the A.G. Bowl Routine. The book and DVD by the same name are extremely great resources full of hard-hitting magic in true Goshman style. I would recommend that as well! Thanks for the reminder William!

I saw Jeff McBride do a Benson Bowl routine at the WMS a couple of years ago. It was not the Rezvani routine. It was completely different.

Johnny Thompson has a version on his Commercial Classics series. He uses a deck of cards as the final load and then goes into a card routine.

This is kinda eating me up and I don't recall where I heard it, but I'll lay in on everyone. No disrespect to Roy Benson, but isn't "The Benson Bowl" a misnomer. What I mean is that he is not the originator of the effect. Obviously, his name has deservedly become synonymous with the bowl routine due to his routine and popularization of it, however wasn't the trick originated by or credited to someone else?
Any input? Thanks. |

WELL... let's see, it goes back a long, long way to China and Japan, where they used rice bowls. Shigeo Takagi published a wonderful book on the classic routine (well worth study), then, in Europe Rezvani created a bowl routine he called "The Tomato Trick." This is detailed in my book, "BOWLing with the Stars."
However, it was Roy Benson who simplified it and made it a very popular and easy to do routine.

Thanks, Pete. I knew it went way back. I was just kinda thinking about more "modern times." Anyway, I'm glad I gave you another opportunity to plug your book. I do believe Rezvani was whom I was thinking. And it's off to the magic bar tonight.

I got my copy about a week after Pete did. I will second the fact that the Bravo! DVD is very, very good and extremely well taught. Jeff was very thorough and has a very good list of resources listed at the end.
Bravo! was the original title for the DVD now released as Squeak Technique. I got a pre-release copy of Bravo! and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the DVD. I already used squeakers in my renaissance and medieval acts, and this video gave me a few really good ideas for them too. Also, Squeak Technique has even more material on it than the original Bravo! DVD. It is worth every dollar you pay, and then some. I highly recommend it. |

As others have said a good place to start with the Benson Bowl is Bruce Elliott's book The Classic Secrets Of Magic. Its in the cups and balls chapter of the book. He gives you Roy Benson's Routine and then gives you Don Allen's Routine. There's another third variation in there too I think. A good book, not too long and easy to read and follow.
But also a great place to either start or continue is Pat Page's Sponge Balls DVD. He gives you his own brilliant Benson Bowl Routine which has some great moves of his own, and as always with Page it is well taught. |

There is a Benson bowl routine taught on Eddy Ray's 2 DVD set of Cups and Balls. |

I perform Roy Bensons routine as outlined in Levents book. Great routine.
I was wondering if there are enough diffferences/ideas/etc in McBrides bravo routine or is the routine basically the same??????????????????? I'm on the fence whether to buy this. McBrides stuff is great, just don't want to buy a routine I already have and perform. Thanks in advance to any feedback. Nel |

McBride's is more like the Rezvani Tomato Trick, using a squeeker and other loads. This is all detailed in his DVD and in print in my book "BOWLing With the Stars."
