I recently got back into coin magic and would like to stick to one gaff manufacturer and due to cost have narrowed it down to Tango and Roy Kueppers. I have purchased hopping half by Tango the one with 2 E [. and was pleased with the quality but Roy's line of commercial gaffs is very similar in price and still priced under Johnson. The only problem is Tango has a larger line of coin effects. Are Roy's coins of higher quality than the Tango and worth the extra cost or should I just stick with Tango?

I would like to point out that any of the effects that you see from Tango, with the exception of a few, can be made for you by Roy. I would go with Roy Kueppers because he can customize any of the gaffs to suit your needs, whether the detail is small or large. The quality I have seen from Roy has been as good or better than that of some other gaffers out there. I have long been disappointed in Tango for various reasons and I will not get into that. Suffice it to say, I have had him make various common effects for me in the past that are just spectatular and very well made. He also guarantees his work. Anything that goes wrong, Roy will take care of it for you.
As with any coin gaffer in the business, be prepared to wait a little for your orders. Roy does custom work in various areas, as well as production of marketed effects for different performers, so that all ties in to his lead-time. Any wait you may have with Roy is very well worth it. I hope this information is useful to you. |

Thanks for the info. Do you have any experience with Roy's non custom work. Most of the effects I have looked into can be bought off the shelf. He has an expanded hopping half set ans well as copper brass silver and both sets are only 11 dollars more than the tango counterparts.

The sound of the coins when they hit others/each other (for what little it matters) are as close to real as you can get. He also uses Chinese coins from Ton Onosaka - which some people say the paint chips off of easily. I have used Onosaka coins that I bought from various dealers, inlcuding Roy, and I have not had that problem and I am fairly hard on my Onosaka coins. That just leads me to believe other performers are doing something they should not be doing with them... Also, the sh***s that you get in any set or that are part of an effect from Roy are very deceptive in that they almost completely cover the insert coins. Usually there is a telltale lip, but not with his. Here again, if something goes wrong with any one of those sets, Roy guarantees his work and will fix any problems that you may have with his items. I will say that to date, I have never had any issues. Once again, I hope this information is useful to you. |
