Wait...don't you have to have some sort of dignity or self-respect before you can trade it for cash?

Maybe you pay your bills another way, Doc. Some of us rely on what we get for performance. There is always self-respect, except where we give it up. It's the worst possible giveaway.

Performing for kids can be tough, they can be quite unpredictable. Back in college, I spent two full seasons with a touring company that did children's theater. (One season I was a directionally impaired, talking, singing French penguin, the next season I was a clown who gave weather predictions, by the way.)
I think Ms. Morgan nailed it, embrace the "play" angle. If kids sense that you are "into it" they sometimes respect you more because many adults lose their sense of "play." If you take this seriously, the kids will probably take it just as seriously. (Except for the ones who are too cool to have fun... there's always a few of those.) The foam swords idea is cool. If you do arm them with foam weaponry of any kind, you might be able to incorporate that into the show. (What would happen if they get to attack you... but you introduce the idea they have to do everything in slow motion like the big action movies they watch? They might really get into that and it could lessen the blows on you.) Now that you have booked the gig, make the preparations necessary for it to be a big success for you and the 6 year old. (Since the theme is "superhero training" maybe you could teach the birthday kid a simple trick and swear him to secrecy... giving him a special power no other kid at the party will have.) The parents hired you and you will come through, I am sure. Pleas let us know how it goes!

Well, I did it. I went wearing a Superman T-shirt, which I claimed I stole from Superman.
I did a couple of tricks, got out of a straitjacket, and got beat up by the little ones. Not a problem except for the little 6 year old ba***rd who fought by pinching my butt. Who taught him to do that? Given the VERY short length of the desired show, it was absolutely worth the payment.

Yeah, those Kryptonite fingernails always were Superman's achilles heel.
Glad to hear it worked out for you. Have a gig like that lined up for August and we can share the fun! LOL |

Why not. $200 per strike, with a 10 strike minimum per person, minimum 3 people helping out. Or $6000, which ever comes first.

I know he does too and that's what makes him a great guy.
But now you have me thinking.... why has no one asked me to sell-out? I better look in my "box of dignity" and see if I can find a little, under all the apology letters I've written, but never sent out.
