Hi guys iam pretty new to coin magic , the only thing I really do with coins is a variation of James Browns one coin routine.
I want to do something close up in the spectators hands , something similar to Tommy Wonders Socked coins (without the sock), I like the idea of the washer coin but I know this seems hard to get hold of. If anyone knows of anything that would be gratefully appreciated. Overall I like the idea of coins vanishing from a spectators hand I was thinking of purchasing a F****** coin and a S*** coin , but wanted to come up with a routine before I purchased what was necessary to achieve an effect Any other routines recommended with a similar feel would be helpful. Thanks Dean |

Check out the DVD from Dan Watkins "Coin Man Walking " There are many routines "in-the-hand-of-the-spectator". Lots of fun there and great routines!

Coin Man Walking is an excellent source. There are lots of effects from the book called Modern Coin Magic by JB Bobo that can be easily modified to be done in the hands of the spectator. You can do a Two In the Hand/One In the Pocket routine as you would perform it with sponge balls, but substitute coins instead, and use the hands of the spectators to do the routine.
Of course you also have other Copper/Silver/Brass routines, Scotch & Soda/Dime and Penny routines and Hopping Halves routines to name but a few, that all can be done in the hands of spectators. Of course, these do not use normal coins, but they are great effects. I hope this information is useful to you. |

Quick question. How can you come up with a routine without having the props first ?
That's like wanting to draw a picture without a pencil.... you can think how you want to draw. But don't know until you really do....lol I'm just saying. Tim
Mean people SUCK!!!!!!!

Things that would look really cool in your mind may also not look so great when you try them out. That is all part of the creative process, but you really do need the props/coins in hand before you can come up with things that way. Besides, just messing around with them can inspire other ideas/things to do with them... What I suggest is getting one or two of the gaff coins or sets and play around with them. If you like what you are doing and learning, and you have learned how to use them properly and are truly into working with them, then expand your arsenal by getting others. On the other hand, if you find you are not really that into it, then you will have a set of coins that you can do some cool effects with, without having money tied up in props you will never use. I hope this helps. |

I see where you are both coming from on this, its not how I usually work, as iam not fully aware of limitations as well as strengths of different gimmicks, I wanted a rough idea of the kind of routine I wanted before I seeked out what props would be necessary to achieve this
As I said I wanted something that I can do in the spectators hands , rather than me showing off as it were, so wanted to know if anyone recommended anything in particular and say to avoid others. Thanks Dean |

I am glad to see that someone recommended Dan's Coin Man Walking DVD. Dan has some bold "in their hands" routines in that DVD that, to my mind, do what you say you want to do. Admittedly, that type of routine will require a committment of time and effort if you are new to coin magic (well worth it IMHO) and very careful routining. If you decide to go the Coin Man Walking route, be sure to obtain a quality gravity f*****r from Lassen, Schoolcraft or the like.
The definitive "magic happening in the spectator's hands" gaff is the Scotch and Soda and Dime and Penny. When the magic is done, the gaff is secure. You can even get real silver coins from Lassen or Schoolcraft to compliment your presentation. The only other gaff that I have found to be as highly reliable as an S&S in having the spectator handling the gaff is the Miracle chip by JB Magic (Mark Mason). Alan |

By the way, if you think that an S&S set is limited in what you can do with it, you might want to reconsider. There are some cool routines out there (Dave Neighbors has some published routines!) that should give you lots of ideas.
I noticed that you mentioned washer coin routines. You may already be aware of it but there is a gaff set that might help for that: Hung, Drawn and Quartered by JB Magic (Mark Mason). Mine works great and is very visual. Very simple routines well explained by Mark - somewhat limited uses though - but you can do it in the spectator's hands. |

My Hung, Drawn, and Quartered was ruined about a week or so after getting it. I put it in a metal box to store it; I had previously lined the box with felt. The glue must have affected the coins very badly as they were slimy and blackened when I took them out. Silver colored cladding is now copper colored, and it won't clean up with anything. Quick $100 down the tubes.

The only thing that puts me off the scotch and soda routine is that iam from the UK and id like to use English coins, borrowed then switched if they are gaffed.
Iam also not sure who produces the best quality for english coins. I think maybe a set with varied gimmicked coins maybe the answer and play with different ideas, which set would people recomend for variety and again this would need to be english coins. Hopping Halves? Thanks Dean |

Try Roy Kueppers at http://www.roykueppers.com/
Roy is in Canada and makes most, if not all, of his gaff coins with Canadian coins. I'm sure he can also make them with UK coins. (After all, if the queen's pic is on it..... pretty much the same!! ) Thanks! Jim |

Oh Yes I have visited this site before, he sells a standard shell set, I was thinking that I maybe need a locking set? if so id have to ask him to custom make them, someone should sell this surely in English coins somewhere.
Thanks Dean |

Roy Kueppers makes locking sets for that as well. If you order from him, you just have to let him know if you want locking or non-locking. Also, he can make any set you want with any currency that you want it made in. Again, you just have to let him know. Good hunting!
