OK so let me clarify...
Search engines can read flash now.. have been able to for a couple f years... they still hate it and it still doesn't index well. WHY? give me a link to the contact page on erics site so I can just call him real quick.... OHHH ya can't cause its Flash.. search engines LIKE to give people what they want when they wat it... IF the user has to come to your homepage (people who REALLY track this will tell you barley 50% come to their website trough the homepage.. and AMAZON says 3% come through the homepage... this whole process and annoyance for the user shows up to the search engines as BOUNCE RATE when you get REALLY high bounces your rankings will suffer.. and even if they don't a BOUNCE rom a person coming from google then BACK to google means your "pretty" site in Flash just helped your #1 competitor book another gig... the search engines know this.. they also know they can only index 1 page (meaning your site will never gain massive weight) so the use of lash is dictated by your goals... Do you need traffic from search results? do you want leads from organic search?? or do you have a brand that everyone knows (Amazon, Coke, Pepsi, Walmart, Disney) because many of them don't care about search results as the brand compensates for it (THIS POST IS NOT TO BASH ERICS SITE BUT TO CLARIFY MY INITIAL STATMENT)

Flash is not going away, integration is already beginning to happen. Apple may not jump on board right away but Qualcomm and Adobe are optimizing flash for the Android. Steve Jobs will have to jump on board or be left behind. Adobe is taking strides to optimize security, performance and lighter as to lessen it's impact on battery life in phones. Google is starting to accept the newer versions of flash because it's more secure and cookies are now easier to get rid of.
Not to mention there are a number of tools to make flash sites Seo friendly.

Adobe is going to have to rebuild the entire framework of flash to make it truly SEO friendly
as there is no way to link to internal pages... no it isn't going away... but as it currently stands it's not good for an entire site.. but hey let more people use it and keep preaching that it's "SEO Friendly" and people saying more and more are going to use it doesn't matter unless adobe opens it up so the individual segments of the FLV files can be directly linked to.. there is a Reason Matt Cutts hasn't talked about Adobe much since 08 it's because they try to make it friendly but FAIL lets see load time is not part of ranking.. flash FAILS deep linking is a MAJOR part.. Flash Not possible.. Flash has its place... but being the framework for an entire site is NOT IT.. It's funny how many times this comes up.. Love it

I also need some website help so I figured I would post the issue here...Maybe Mike will want to begin re-building our friendship and offer a little help? He really does know his stuff...
So has anyone seen google display a different page title in favor of anchor text from another source??? If you google "magician portland oregon" I come up at the very top organically. But look at the page title, it says "Portland Oregon Magicians". This is not my page title!!! This has been going on for a few months now and it returns different, yet similar, page titles depending on the search phrase. Other searches return "Magician Portland, Or" as the page title. Obviously google is giving more weight to the anchor text in the backlink I have from other sites but how can this be fixed? I can't believe that google would just make that kind of executive decision! I can understand them changing the description but the page title?? Its the name of a freaking document google!! I'm not the only one, a little research returned this blogger/SEO guy's same issue... http://www.johnfdoherty.com/how-distille......e-title/ This might be far beyond Café users but I'm sure Mike has run into this before so perhaps he has some suggestions that could help us all... But if anybody else is having this problem please share! |

Yeah this is a pain...
this has been going on RANDOMLY for about a year.. so there are a few factors we are splt testing to figure out When and WHY google is doing this... some of the ones we KNOW why they are changing (we thing there are more reasons just havn't found them all) 1. your title tag is over 60 characters, so if the title doesn't have exact match keyword but they see something else that does .. 2. you have duplicate title tags within your site .. 3. (within the last week) people in Google + are +1 your page in a thread (100+ 1's and we saw the title in SERPS change to the thread title in Google +) this has been something limited, but is picking up since the rollout of google + we saw MOST change back to what was written than google selected by rewriting the tag using the "Keyword" in the tag and getting it down to a max of 60 characters.. we are still split testing this though it's still not being used consistantly so it's hard to know when and why exactly they are doing it I know that's not much help but I will update ya when I have more details

Eric,
Don't get discouraged. If you ask 100 people about your site you will get 100 different opinions. I will say the number one thing your site has going for it is that, unlike almost all the sites of the people that offered criticism (positive or negative), your contact information is prominently displayed at the top of your page where it is easily seen. Potential clients don't have to click another link or fill out a from to contact you. I like to think of it this way: If someone looking at a page had a cell phone glued to one hand and only a keyboard to navigate with how could they contact you based on what is on the screen at the time your page comes up. Don't just ask magicians, ask non-magicians what they think as well. Get as many different opinions as you can. Most importantly, listen to what everyone has to say. You may not always like what you hear but that is just part of the design process. You actually have a pretty good start. Just keep tweaking. Mike
