I thought blatant advertising wasn't allowed on the Magic Café. You would never seem me indulging in such wickedness.

Poor old Don hasn't adjusted to the fact that his day in the sun is over. The King is dead. Love live the King!

" He is known in the business as one of the most bad tempered pitchmen around and has been getting into "augments" every day he has been on the joint. "

Watching The Senior Pitchman's Reunion 2008 set I see a segment with Mr Driver getting along quite well.

You haven't seen him snarling at waitresses and snapping at one of his roommates in Colon so much that the poor chap deserted him in mid convention. He is a pitchman and we are all horrible people. I am too but at least I can spell.

This business can be very difficult. It can be fun as well as torture. It can be an adventure as well as a grind. Some days it will take me 10 minutes to count the money and some days I don't even bother to count it. It is a roller coaster ride and you have to have an almost Zen state of mind not to go crazy and give up.

I spent over 200 days on the road last year, pretty much doing this full time. It was a ton of work and I took risks, but it paid off in the end. I made a significant amount more then I would have performing full time in this economy.

Why does ML worry about people learning the business? Does he think it will take away sales, or is he just jealous of other people doing it? There are so many people out there, so many products, so many spots that there is enough for everyone. I may not make a sale every now and then because they bought a similar product, but sometimes they have seen it before (but not bought) and are now ready to buy or often times (if they bought before) they are good “marks” to buy my version of the item or buy again.

I may be naïve, but I haven’t had to worry about competition and I believe that most of the people on this forum are 40 milers and doing weekend shows. The few times that I did have competition it didn’t affect sales too much, there’s more then enough for everybody. That’s why I don’t mind sharing some information.

Also the fact that this business is so hard you don’t really have to worry about competition. It is a large investment of time and money to get started if you want to work larger venues. Even the person I trained for six months last year makes about ½ my average, and that is with me providing spots and the main product, two major things he doesn’t have to worry about. I am working on expanding and have found it difficult to get spots in the places I want to work. Not because of direct competition but because of low turn over rates at the venues.

The problem with DD is he will ridicule anyone who doesn’t follow his system. I among others have been the brunt of this. It doesn’t bother me, but may discourage others. There is not a wrong or right way depending on how you like to work and if it brings you in the money. It is an art as much as it is a science. I have my standard set-up and pitch but have to make adjustments depending on the venue and crowd, even the time of a day.

If it wasn’t for other pitchman sharing with me I may not be in this business (or doing so well), so to those have shared and helped me I thank you. Even Don and Mark. But have no doubts; most of this business you have to learn the hard way, by doing it.

"And it is a bloody awful way to make a living anyway. I should know if anyone does. And Don knows it too. That is why he has sold out. Purely to make money from his DVD and on that DVD and on here he pretends that the grafting business is "fun". It isn't. It is hell on earth and Don knows that just as well as I do. The difference is that I am not afraid to warn you all about it. He wants to make money off the backs of other people who are trying to make a living so of course he doesn't tell you this."

Mr Lewis,
You have books out on both the mouse and the Svengali so how does this make you any different?

Everybody is out to make a buck,so what.

It ain't jealousy. It is self preservation. You don't yap about this business. And there is NOT enough for everyone. THAT is the attitude I take and have taken my whole life. Sure, someone creeps through now and then but you have to be on your guard against them. They can affect your living. Sometimes there is nothing you can do about them but it is the height of foolishness to encourage them.

Why is the worm beginning to die in the US? Because plenty of people are out there doing it. You want to discourage this trend, not ignore it.

It is a very tough business. And to make real money you have to travel for reasons I have no time to explain. Stay in the same place for too long, unless it is a resort area, and you will eventually find it will go stale.

But if you travel you won't see your family very often. And the work is hell on earth, that I can promise anyone that tries it. It is very tempting to avoid this hell on earth by hiring other people and attempting to expand. Nine times out of ten that ends in disaster especially if you are not there to keep an eye on things since when the cat is away the mice will play.

Anyway, one good thing about Will Roya is that Don can't stand him. So he can't be all bad. I often wonder who Don hates the most. Me or Roya. Maybe he will tell us.

I don't give a stuff about "everybody" I care about me and me alone. The rest of you can starve for all I care and if I were still active in the same way I used to be I would take steps to make you starve.

As for my books they are MAGIC books, not pitch books. I disclose not one word about the business, in any way, shape or form. And if I did I would be charging a hell of a lot more money than Don Driver because my information is worth far more.

I did have a few lapses and in my Wit and Wisdom book I did give away some limited information on how to actually SELL the decks but nothing whatever about where to work or purchase supplies.

Perhaps one day when I am as decrepit as Don Driver and can't work any more I may reveal the REAL way to work. Until then you will get nothing out of me.

Coming from the tech world this is somewhat amusing. Can you imagine PhotoBucket kvetching over Flickr "stealing" from them? Ideas are like water, execution is the key. Seems not everyone is cut out to do this, but "this" can be done in an infinite number of ways, with infinitely variable results. Hopefully we can get back to honing techniques and discussing best practices.

Oh, and I'm *really* new to this aspect of the magic universe Smile

The worm is dead, long live the worm.

I echo Don Driver in saluting the banishment of Mark Lewis.
Lewis, I salute you as magiclands foremost internet troll, and look forward to your reappearance under some silly name. Quite sad actually.
