The Kindle version is not the 8 volume set (though the picture is misleading...)Its the same original version you can get for free elsewhere (no longer under copyright). Might be worth it to you to have in Kindle format, but has no table of contents and no search function--when I read it I basically have to pick a page at random and hope its interesting. The original course material includes much but definitely not all of the material from the first five Tarbell books. It also has some material that's not in the first 7 volumes ( I don't have the 8th, maybe some of it made it there) -mostly this missing material is only interesting from a historical perspective...

Tarbells is still a must have for any serious magician, of course you have to read them, just putting them on a shelf somewhere will do you no good.

The "original" Tarbell being referenced as a 1-volume item was the sixty-six part correspondence course that Harlan developed and mailed out to subscribers. It is VERY comprehensive. If you'd like a look at the contents, feel free to go to:

Just dusted off the Vol. 1 and discovered the first chapter on the history of magic. I must admit, when I was a kid I skipped right over it. That chapter alone is worth owning the book. I don't own the whole set but I think they are a must have (or a must read if they have them at your local library).

I think you should ask yourself "what kind of magician do I want to be"? After the little guy inside of you speaks buy something a little bit more up to date in that specialty of magic. How many volumes can you consume in one lifetime?

^ Thanks, that's what I though.
Is it because the other one is from Magic Makers? lol I'm guessing because the MM one is out of date and the only reason to get it is to have the way they appeared in their original form, right? |

No because the full eight volumes contain much more lessons, effects and teachings than just the hardbound volume

Volume 7 (not included in the one-big-book, or the downloads) is the volume written by Harry Lorayne, and it's excellent. It has excellent material, brilliantly taught, and most importantly a full index of volumes 1-7, categorized in different ways. Once you've read it all through, you'll find yourself wanting to refer to different effects, or look up variations of methods or plots - that's when the index starts to be really worthwhile. And in order for the references to make sense, it's better to have the other volumes in the same edition - so that page numbers and volumes all tally.
Volume 8 has some excellent stuff in it too; at least as good as the others. But volume 7 and the index is what makes it really, really useful. It means you can use the course as an encyclopedia. |
