Sam -

I understand that you aren't interested in further discussion on the topic of website width. Thanks for clarifying.

However, I'd like to encourage others to check out those googlelabs / browsersize links that I provided.

You can look at any site by putting in the right URL, and it puts their grid overlay over the site (you can also change the opacity of the grid overlay). I tested it with my site and with Sam's.

According to google's tracking info, only 50% of people have their monitors set to 1050 pixels wide, or wider, who use google. That means at least 50% of typical google users would have to scroll sideways to see a site that is wider than 1050 pixels. It drops off dramatically in that range between 975 pixels and 1050 pixels. I found those stats interesting.

I discovered the googlelabs link just yesterday when I decided to find out more about "standard" website widths.

This doesn't just have stats for browser widths, but also stats for browser lengths. So, a user can see the stats for the "above the fold" area of a website (before someone has to scroll down).

To see more of the graph / grid, change your monitor screen resolution.

This info might be helpful or interesting to others who are designing / redesigning sites.

Here's the link again:

So 50% of
google users
will see Sam
site as is.

50% of google
will have
to scroll over.

But, 100% will
have to scroll
over to read
EVERY post on
this thread. LOL
(except this one!!!)

Got it. Thanks Donald Smile

(p.s. Hope this doesn't
cause too many backroom

You guys are funny! LOL

Donald as always your a plethera of info and I for one love it!!

I appreciate the info that you are sharing but again if my web guy says this is the new norm then why would I want to stay with the old sure 50% of the people according to the stats will see my site wide but 100% of the people will see my smooking cool site regardless of it being wide or not.

Donald the info was interesting but once again I need to point out that these stats will change over the next year. and I will already be prepaired for the changes as my site is made for the future of websites.

John that was really funny yet true!

Hi all I did some research in to the size of my site not only form my web guy but other professionals as well as documented trends

here is the deal

wish I knew how to paste a screen shot for you sorry
Screen Resolution

Today, most visitors are using a screen resolution higher than 1024x768 pixels:

Date Higher 1024x768 800x600 640x480 Other

January 2011 85% 14% 0% 0% 1%

January 2010 76% 20% 1% 0% 3%

asd you can see85% of todays sites are higher as in they are the same size or similar size to my site. again if you are seeing it to big then you are behind the curve and not up with the current settings being used today.

so hopefully this clears up the problem for you that think the site is to big.
hopefully this also helps you when you go to make your new site or update or whatever so that you can make it more current.

thanks agian to all those that posted have a great day. off to another show now

What you mean for those that "Think" it's too big.
I know for a FACT it's too big. LOL

Let me try one more time:

The computer has nothing to do with it. Stop blaming it on out of date computers.
I have two desktop computers at home, two laptops, and six more new computers at my office.
It's too big on every single one of them IF the print size has been enlarged.

Sam, try it on your own computer. Press Ctrl and + to enlarge the print type and tell us what you see.

See, what I'm saying is that some people do adjust the settings to make the fine print larger.
And if you surfing in that mode, and end up on your site, then yes it is to big.

Other than that, yes it looks great.

Honestly I say all this with a smile and not saying the site is bad. Please don't think that.

Simply pointing out that we all are not behind the curve, we just old and blind. Smile

LOL tom

I understand wh at you are saying. I am fine with my site as is and I guess I will have to live with the fact that old and blind people will have to scroll left and right for my site.

its all good!

I'm confused by your stats. Does the 85% include 1024 AND ALSO higher? Or just the 1152, 1280, and 1440 widths? Was the word Higher referring to a seperate category encompassing several sizes?

Also, do your stats include all of your visits and your website designer's visits?

Is it tracking visitors or visits?

- Donald

P.S. We all have our strengths. I was able to do a screenshot and post it. Sam wasn't. Sam was able to live with larger monitor settings. And I wasn't. Smile

I am staying out of the argument but according to my own stats the screen resolutions are as follows.

800-984 2.6%

1024-1257 20.3%

1280-1400 33.6%

1440 18.5%

1600-1680 10.9%

1920- 2560 8.2%

I think Sam is safe. Smile

Ade you are correct that was the acceptable width 2 years ago. sure a lot of sites are still that size

however it has moved beyond that.

I am really amazed as to the talk about my site being too wide. other then the magicians here on the Café NO ONE has commented that it is to big

I have sent out tons of blasts to clients friends and strangers and yet no one commented that it was to big. I have viewed my site on over 20 different computers from friends, clients, iphones, droids, ipads, laptops, desktops and the apple store and they all looked perfect.

I don't know what else to tell you or say at this point.

life goes on I guess.

The most current stats I have seen match what drake posted above...

I dsign off of 1000px and only once have had a client say that people mentioned having to scroll left to right (and that was a family member on a 15" monitor)

umm I don't know how to say this without it sounding rude (not meaning to just don't know how to word it)

if the person on my site is so far outdated that they can't view it without scrolling there is a HUGE chance they can't afford me...
OR are to cheap to do anything but price shop..

90% of my clients have bought a new computer every few years like clockwork because work demands it hence it could be a pre qualifier if your market is anything like mine..

I t hink you make a valid point and interesting to boot! I agree with what you said and yes it was hard to write that so that you did not sound rude.
but its true I guess. most of my clients are indeed in a higher tax bracket so they are going to have up to date computers th us being able to see my site as it was designed.

really though whats teh big deal if they h ave to scroll a little left or right. those people most likly thing that's the norm as my site is NOT the only site they view. therefore its nothing to worry about.

so far my site has been very well received and already gotten some good leads.
