I love doing The web...But, I am concerned as to whom one should do it too. I do it on some people, but do not dare do it on others... When do you do it??

I pretty much perform it on everyone anytime. But stay clear of the elderly! I have heard they dont take kindly to it.

Rabbit it is all up to you.. your personality. Me I would do it on the biggest meanest and scareiest looking guy. If he gets mad.... then RUN!!!!!! If he likes it.. dude you are home free for the rest of the effect.

You got to stand for something or you will fall for anything .... unless you are tired and you need to lay down or at least sit down then it is ok not to stand, my own opinion of course.

I NEVER do it. I don't want to be sued if someone who suffers from arachnophobia dies of a heart attack or something.
Why steer clear of the elderly? Elderly people are normally tough, master bug squishers. But, anyone could be terrified of spiders. I actually think it is poor magic, reducing magic to the level of the practical joke. Look at it this way, it may seem like fun and get shrieks and laughs most of the time, but all it takes is one person to freak out and that is one booking you are not going to get again. Come to think of it, yeah, I think you should all do it. Doesn't it annoy you when you sometimes come across these people who refer to your magic as jokes? Now you know why. Paul Hallas |

Paul, I agree with you. I think this Trick, (and trick being the key word) stinks.
But, whatever floats your boat. Just because I don't like it, does not make it a bad thing. Just that I won't use it. |

I only perform it for people who I know well. The only other problem is that I get nervous when I do "the dirty work" because I don't know if they will feel anything unusual or not. Does anyone else feel this???

I work for a lot of comedy clubs and I enjoy performing effects like this. after all, all we do are magic tricks... we are not changing the world by having someone pick a card. it really doesn't matter if they look upon your magic as a practical joke... they probably thought that before you began showing anything. I find that humor like this gets everyone in the mood for some good entertainment. I doubt anyone could or would sue over something as trivial as this. if they could... then they could also probably sue over you sneaking up on then and yelling, "BOO!" I also doubt that a booking could be lost over something like this... the only way I can see someone losing a show with a trick of this sort is by doing badly. |

I agree with Paul Practical Jokes are not magic. What if the shocked person spills their soup over there £1,000 dress or suit? Where is the entertainment in the trick anyway? the magicial portion is fairly weak to say the least. the only entertainment I can find is for the performer. phillip |

Well you should know I guess, living in the land of the ambulance chasing lawyers But I think you will find one day that people that do suffer from phobias take them VERY seriously. I was in a boat once when someone who was terrified of snakes saw one and almost overturned the boat in panic. When a child, I truly upset a neighbour by leaving the tops of tomatoes around, she thought they were spiders and was terrified. You may well doubt that a booking may be lost over someone complaining to a booker, I don't doubt it at all. I'm not telling you not to perform it, that's your perogative, but it is not something I would use. Obviously I fail to see the artistic benefits of it. Paul Hallas |

I perform a non-lethal effect based on "The Web." It's called "Bear Hands" and can be done even in a restaurant setting.

Although I don't do this effect myself, I have seriously considered it, and agree with the thinking of M.P.D. The reaction it gets, is certainly different than that which most other effects elicit. This adds a little variety to a set, which is a good thing.
I can however, see Paul's point. I certainly don't think even the most seriously arachnophobic person would ever "die of a heart attack" just from the sight of one of the dreaded creatures! However, Paul also adds "or something", and what that something could possibly be, is definitely worth a bit of concern. I would hate to be the cause of any type of mishap, even if it's merely the overturning of a drink. As always, it all boils down to each ones preference. I'll just point out that this is a favorite effect of Lance Burton's - and I don't think he's killed anyone yet! |

You surprise me Brad,I thought Lance Burton had better taste!
I'm now working on one where the spectator ends up with fake dog doo in their hand, I'm sure it'll be a winner and get lots of laughs. Especially after Ding Dong. Paul. |

I think this effect more so than a lot of others is subject to the performers style. I am not at all surprised to see those that disagree with the effect do so. From my observations (limited as they may be) Mr. Jones and Mr Hallas subscribe to a more artistic style.
More than who? Well, me for instance. I love the web, in a party strolling atmosphere it works wonders for me. My magic is very light hearted, fun, yes perhaps amusing little tricks. THAT'S WHAT I AM GOING FOR. I'm trying to have fun and let others do the same. Yes I have been slapped. Mostly on the arm and that's part of the fun for me and my audience. As for who I do it on. I reserve it for rare occasions when I find someone Who is having fun and receptive to all I have to offer. Then I play a little. Would I dare do it for anyone that seems amused with me? No. Only those who really want more. I love it. My wife HATES it. I try to only do it for people who I think would love it.

I believe this effect, certainly has it's place, when performing in certain venues.
Take for instance, M.P.D.'s comment, "...I work for a lot of comdedy clubs, and I enjoy performing effects like this..." The comedy club setting, is an environment, in which people want to have a good laugh. So, the atmosphere in which M.P.D. is performing the effect, is more condusive to the 'surprise' of the effect. It's all taken in 'fun'. In many ways, doing this effect in that comedy-club setting, would be somewhat expected. So, I think the atmosphere and 'setting' should coinside with the effect you are performing. Eugene Berger would have no problem, pulling this effect off (look at his performing nature, and the 'setting' in which he performs nearly all of his effects). - - Troy

Alleycat, it's a packet trick where you are dealing cards onto a spectators hands, a picture of a spider disappears and when she looks at the back of her hand a joke shop spider is stuck there which shocks her/him.
There was also a version put out called Butterfly Love, with a butterfly, but that didn't appeal to magicians' darker sides lol. Brad said; Although I don't do this effect myself, I have seriously considered it, and agree with the thinking of M.P.D. The reaction it gets, is certainly different than that which most other effects elicit. This adds a little variety to a set, which is a good thing. Watching someone slip on a banana skin can get a good reaction, but if they become injured the mood soon changes. In a comedy club you can put a metal bucket over someone's head and bang it with sticks and get a reaction.... It is a different scenario,a comedy club, though unless I was doing wandering close up in a comedy club (which I have done)I think I'd go for something bigger and more visual. Mr. Ed said; I love it. My wife HATES it. I try to only do it for people who I think would love it. Already 50% of the people in your house don't like it! So, you only do it for people who you THINK would love it. So already it cannot be a regular part of your set. And the trouble is, it is extremely difficult to know what people think (unless you're a mentalist) Will a spectator you've performed the web on want to help another magician again? Probably not. OK I had to share this response.
I've been doing the WEB for about a year now and have had lots of good response from it, especially on Halloween. However, one response was classic. I was at a school in a semi-rural setting, kids whose parents commute to the city to work. After having gone through the flustration portion the 14 year old girl for whom I was performing turned her hand over, saw the spider, flicked it off and continued like it was nothing, continued to wave her hands. She was completely unfazed by the arachnid but impressed by the disappearing, reappearing design on the cards. Thank goodness for that at least. |
