Just wondering if the bugs lent any sway in the dissension for their forgoing the last year of the contract?
And, as I said before, for those with a desire to mingle with ghosts, perhaps include the Drawbridge as a stop to Vent Haven. LOL

I did not hear anyone say anything about the bugs. If they were involved in the thinking, it will probably not be mentioned. Personally, I would be more concerned that too many room A/C units might not have been operational, and there was the odor of mould in some of the hall areas. Then there was the food service issues. Even with all of that said, I will still miss the ambience of the old place, but if we are to grow and move forward, lets just remember the good stuff and realize its time to move on to the future.

As far as I am concerned this is the best move ever for out family. The event always outweighed the problems of the Drawbridge but it will be a pleasant releif to be in a new, modern and clean facility. Kudos to you Mark for making the change. Also the so to speak ghosts will follow us all where ever we go!!

Maybe we should hold a seance at the Drawbridge next year - I'd love to talk to some of those ghosts!

Guys, please don't take the word "ghosts" literally. I meant it was cool to think that Bill Boley and other legends of the past had entertained people on that stage, stood in that backstage room and entertained and educated audiences the same way we were. Their memory will follow us, as Dan mentioned, because conVENTion is about the people - not the place.
As for the bug problem - I know of only one instance of that, which ballooned into a spectacle for the local news. No one else had a problem. Bed bugs are unfortunately a major issue right now. I just encountered them at a Hampton - so they're everywhere. Read up on them, know how to check for them and do so BEFORE you bring any luggage or personal items into a room. That way you won't be the one transporting them and infecting areas. |

Hi all..
The Drawbridge just had too many obstacles to overcome. The owners changed from time to time, but no major renovations were made, so we were stuck with an old run down hotel. I just couldn't allow a first class conVENTion to be housed in a second rate hotel any longer. I was under a long term contract, but we were almost at the end of it and I decided to make the change. As to the bed bug issue..it was blown out of perportion and was an isolated incident, and it never really played into making the decision to leave. The person in question found two bed bugs, and the hotel immediately sprang into action. The comped her room all week, gave her another room, picked up over $300. of her dry cleaning of her clothes, I gave her back her registration of $375. (which I didn't have to..it was a hotel matter). The hotel had a clean bill of health and was just checked prior to our group coming in. I'm not sure if the dead bugs were already in the room or possibly were transported in by the person in question. It all terminated by this person calling the local tv station and getting on camera telling about the supposed bed bug outbreak. Funny..when the news team appeared at their room, the young lady vent had her puppet out ready to perform. Seems kinda strange to me... I know you will all love the new Marriott! Oh man, some people will do ANYTHING to get on TV...
Bedbugs, geez, why didn't I think of bedbugs? Maybe I could order some online. Seriously, the things you have to patiently deal with Mark.. you sir, are a great man. |

That was a bit over the top to call in the local TV folk. But, onward to the next destination. This will be fun.
Best of times ahead. Doc

And you just know someone is saying, "well those ventriloquists are crazy as bedbugs anyway"....

Bedbugs are a real issue all over the place right now. There are some preventative steps we can all take to avoid problems for ourselves.
When you first check into a room, do not take anything in to the room. Go into the room and lift up the edges of the bedding. Look carefully along the seamed edges of the bed, closely examining the edges of the seams. If there are bedbugs present, they will be hiding in the tight seams. Do this on all three of the exposed edges of each bed in the room. If you find any evidence of an infestation, immediately go to the front desk and report the problem. Ask for another room in another area of the facility. Do NOT call the local TV station. People running Motels/Hotels live in a panic over the problem. It is NOT about their sanitation practices. Any previous guest may have brought the bugs in with their luggage, so the establishment can only deal with a problem when it is brought to their attention. By not taking any of your things into the room before doing your own inspection, you avoid becoming a victim to the problem, and instead become a useful part of the solution. Bedbugs have been on the rise ever since DDT was banned. Before that they were on the decline. If we all just use our heads and work together, we can defeat the little critters. The alternative is for the hotel/motel to set up the equivelent of "TSA" check points to examine all of our luggage before we are allowed to enter the facility and God knows we don't need that. This is great news! At first I saw "Cincinatti" and my heart sank because I thought it had been moved to Ohio for a split second...but since it's still in Kentucky, I might make it next year!

This year is my first VH ConVENTion, so glad that I could have experience stayed in Drawbridge hotels.
In walking distant from Drawbridge there are several restaurants/cafe, supermarket and even Home Depot & Hardware store. I bought a couple of salad bag, a bottle of salad dressing, a pack of bread, some earth magnet and some spring. So I could save my money for lunch & dinner, ate buritto for lunch once, and bought supplies for my vent figures project. What kind of stores are in walking distant from the new location? Is there any supermarket or restaurant/cafe? This information will help us who don't have car, but want to save some money, get some menu variation, or anythings else. |

But there's a lot of car rentals around so if you are going again, I'll drive you around. I've driven US cars before when I was in Hawaii so no issues. |

Wow Budi, you did a lot more exploring than I did. I think the only thing I knew about when I was there was a convenience store practically next door to the Drawbridge.
From Joseph's search it sounds like it's a good thing I usually rent a car to go on a trip like that. I usually avoid eating in a hotel restaurant. The food is usually just okay and pricey, or if it's very good, it's very pricey.

Unfortunately, the closest restaurants are the next exit down from the new hotel..about a mile. Not easy for walking and too darn hot in July to venture out. The hotel restaruant is excellent and we have made provisions for a breakfast and lunch bar to be available for our attendees that will be inexpensive and ala carte. We had to give up a little bit to gain a lot more, so hang in there with us as it will definitely be great change.
Also..the whole area is considered the Greater Cincinnati area, that'w why the Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport is in Kentucky, as well as our Cincinnati Airport Marriott. Sounds funny, but Cincinnati is a massive city and its tentacles reach into Ohio, Kentucly and Indiana. Just thought you'd be interested. Mark markwade@kidshowvent.com |

This sounds very exciting. As Tom and others have mentioned, it will be a little sad leaving all that history behind. I'm just wondering what the open mic participants are going to do for material if the restaurant turns out to be good.

My thoughts are, it will be strange to see the group shot somewhere else. Of course its the great folks in the photo that mater not the location. I am looking forward to seeing the new digs in 2012. I just hope my vender table cloth fits the new tables, I am ever the perfectionist.
