It was my great honor to edit my friend Tom Gagnon's new book, "Avant-Cards."
In describing the contents to other "card guys" at The Magic Circle in London, several commented that they were afraid that the material was going to be impossible for them. I told them that, in my opinion, there was material that would be of interest to any lover of card magic who had progressed beyond the "rank beginner" stage. What's your opinion, Tom? What level card magician will get the most out of your book? Matt Field |

Hi Matt,
Before I answer Matt’s question, I would like to state that it was an honor to have Matt serve as my editor. As I anticipated, Matt did an extraordinary job on the book, and I hope to be able to use his services again. Now—for the answer to Matt’s question. Obviously, when one purchases a book on the subject of card magic it’s a grab bag. One never knows what to expect. After all, it depends on the technical skill level of the reader, and whether the reader will dedicate sufficient time practicing the material. Nothing worthwhile comes easily—particularly cutting edge card magic. Was the book written in the vein of Steve Beams remarkable series “Semi-Automatic Card Tricks?” Certainly not. However, to ensure that the material is discernable, each item has been thoroughly explained and meticulously illustrated and, as such, most of the material is well within the grasp of the average card worker. |
