I recently came upon a chinese magician performing CCC on TV. The video is about an hour long (no, not an hour long of CCC! The full program that was posted on the vid site), but the first routine is CCC. Just thought it'd be interesting to share!

No I think the frist handleing anyway was Troy Hooser's! And I think it's in his hard bound book!

It was Troy Hooser who invented the trick. I perform this all the time, and in this case the hosts are in on the trick on a couple of moves to make it seem more impossible. This is a very good coin routine. I highly recommend it.

Rklew64 if you google Charming Chinese Challenge DVD several on line magic dealers carry the DVD. I purchased the coins separately while attending a Joshua Jay lecture, but I am sure you can get appropriate coins from an on line magic store. I like the one's I purchased because they are thin and easy to work with. The ribbon can be purchased from a fabric store. It is a GREAT routine and well worth the practice needed. The instruction by Troy on the DVD is very clear and helpful. Good luck!

As mentioned by above, CHarming Chinese Challenge is Troy Hooser's. I thought to just post the exact book where you can find this, which is Troy's DesTroyers book (first routine if I'm not wrong). The book has MANY great routines (i love it!). And for CCC there's also DVD for it. I highly recommend getting both... DVD is great as you get to see it live, plus there are additions from Shoot and others.

Troy prefers and uses the Johnson Chinese coin, which is half dollar-sized. There is a lot of discussion over the fact the coins must be a certain thickness for this routine, and more to the point that they must be thin. This is not true because the moves all work with coins of any thickness, but there are some that are more conspicuous with thinner coins. I use Onosaka, Johnson and Mogar coins regularly. I have also used the Fun Inc. Chinese dragon coins with no problems.
All that aside, use whatever works best for you; this routine is excellent and I love performing it! |

AFAIK Troy uses the Sterling coins, and specifically mentions Not using the Johnson coins. This routine works best with thin coins. I've used half and Dollar size coins, both work fine, its a great routine that can works well for both close up and small parlor.

If anyone is interested in the Sterling Chinese coins, you can find them at http://www.sterlingmagic.com, and I must thank jordanl for his inadverdant correction of my mis-typed post. |

I live in sunny Singapore which means I also have the good fortune to be able to find Chinese coin replicas which are half dollar size and great to work with. However, as I now use a different method from the original Ccc, I cannot work with replica coins. I now use onasaka's harmony coins and I highly recommend those - they are a beauty to work with! My only 'complain' is that those coins are immediately identified that they are not 'real Chinese coins'. Not all the words on the coin are Chinese...

I saw Joshua Jay perform this in a lecture some years ago. He sells appropriate coins through his website.

"A Charming Chinese Callenge" was first published in "The Silver Surf," 1998 by Joshua Jay and Troy Hooser. The book includes three of Hooser's routines. The inspiration for the routine is credited to a trick by Ohio magician Nathaniel Lane.
If you ever get a chance to see Hooser perform, to so -- it is a real treat. His magic is as good as it gets. |

I have Troy's DVD, but I want to adapt this to use dollar sized coins. Has anyone tried this? I know it presents a few handling issues, and I was wondering how you have dealt with them. Thanks!

I use my Lassen Miracle Enjoyment Set. Although I have only played around with it a bit, it seems like it will work fine.
