Hey Guys,

I was in Atlantic City last night and played Black Jack for the first time in a casino. I was playing single deck 21. I was wondering if any of you could recommend a good beginners black jack book? I been looking at some but there are so many.

I got the bug now. I made $320 playing off of impusle and gut. I was making some stupid moves that was ****ing off fellow players. Any help wouldl be Appreciated

Having that as your first experience sure does make it feel easy doesn't it?

Nothing could be further from the truth. Everyone remembers their first experience, especially a win... no matter how many losses you now suffer, this first win will always be nagging at you. Quit while you are ahead... right now. Despite the positive outcome in this instance, we already know that you have willingly risked your money in a casino with little or no knowledge of how to beat the game... your future in blackjack does not look bright.

Dowser is right, the worst thing that could happen to anyone is they win their first time out. Plants a seed in some people that grows out of control, some, not all. Plus you were playing single deck with the crappy rules ? Youre lucky to win anything at all, you must have really got hot.
Me, I hate the game of 21 but I will shoot crap on occasion, not often but now and then, I still enjoy it some even after dealing it all these years. I won the first time I played also, lol.

Disagree. There are other reasons to gamble apart from winning money, i.e. recreation. The fact that he played without knowledge doesn't indicate anything other than he had some money to play around with, and he thought it would be fun. Blackjack is a beatable game, and he's wise enough to recognize his own lack of knowledge. There's no reason that, having played previously for recreation, he can't now educated himself and learn enough to have a positive future EV.

Well that's why I wanted to know a good book to read for beginners so I could learn some basic stratagey. I like the game of 21. I usually stick with mini baccarat.

My bug is not to go rush and play again to break the bank for easy money. My bug is to learn more about the game besides both cards need to add up to 21 and not go over.

Thanks for your time to reply to my post with the warnings. I was just hoping for a good book to learn from.

Kind Regards
Mike

Blackbelt in Blackjack by Arnold Snyder

Even with basic strategy you'll be a loser. With a solid count, some skills acquired through dozens of hours of practice, and favourable game conditions, you'll be able to play the $10 game with about $10k as a bankroll so you don't get bankrupt by a losing streak (most of the time).

Why does he need to say anything? With all the information out there, you don't need to be told. If you still think you do, it's unlikely some random guy will convince you of something that decades of computer simulations have already proven.

This is just common knowledge....perfect basic strategy gives a house edge of around 0.5%, and counting is more than enough to overcome that disadvantage, with bet variance and minor strategy adjustments.

I've already been down this road here with respect to sports betting. Some know, some will always disbelieve, and others will learn.

Basic BlackJack by Stanford Wong;
The theory of Blackjack by Peter Griffin;
Million Dollar Blackjack by Ken Uston are all good starters to give you a clue.

But my earlier advice is still the best your gonna get.

You make a strong argument but now I must disagree. There is much reason that a recreational player will have difficulties. "Educating" oneself and learning "enough to have a positive future EV." is not a simple matter and requires discipline. Players that still gamble for "recreation" (which is often just something they tell themselves: how recreational does it feel when they are stuck for most their bank?) don't have that discipline. He may change his philosophy towards gambling but his original post certainly does not have that tone. I have talked to thousands of guys like him (and that's a conservative estimate) and have watched their progress over many years and the op's enthusiasm based on his winnings and his naive desire to get a "beginners book" are all classic signs leading to a very familiar result.

I am sure it will change in terms of play but Im trying to aquire better knowledge of the game period. Im not trying to make a living off playing black jack here. I go to AC once in the blue moon and when I do go I don't want to look like a tourist and have some Idea on how to move in a game.

Im here to aquire more knowledge about gambling not just magic that poses as gambling.
