Hi. I've had a go at this. My problem was getting the bottom of the table to fit neatly onto the camera tripod fitting. It ended up being a bit wobbly, since the fitting at the top of the tripod wasnt very broad. On a commercial tripod I don't thing it would be easy to replace the base plate with another pipe with a broader base plate on it.
If you have some kind of "homemade' base plate fitted to your table top its a good idea to make sure you have a short pipe as part of the unit, assuming you will attach the new base plate fixed under the table to the tripod. This short pipe, assuming you use a screw in the side of it to tighten it to the pipe going down into the tripod top, will need to be long enough to allow the screw to rotate to tighten the table top. I'm sure some threads must already cover using a camera tripod for a table top. Try using http://searchthemagiccafe.com/ to feed in some key words for a search and see what you get. I tried "camera tripod table top base" [copy those words, leaving out the speech marks] and got a few threads on the topic.
The presentation makes the magic.

Thanks I have had a look, the camps seem to be divided between "Don't do it" and "it's fine". I think I'll go look up some buskers and see what they are using.

Ironically, the thread right below this one (as of today) talks about cases.
What you're looking for is called "a tripe and keister" The tripe is the tripod, the keister is the case. There's a book called "The Medicine Show Manual". It's an excellent book. There's a full description of a keister and a one-page description with two photos of "the sample case". Do some searches on that, I believe there's some dealers out there.
