Hey everyone,
I've been busy working on a load of great new card material, one of the things I'm most excited about is an effect I'm provisionally calling PHAAN (Poker Hand at any Number) It's not an effect for the mentalism purists, it's for card guys and it goes down a storm especially when performing it to poker players. The effect is as follows. The spectator shuffles the deck. The Performer gets them to select a card He then gets them to construct the best possible poker hand they can using the card they've selected and four other cards. He then asks for four numbers between 1 and 51. He deals down to these positions setting aside the card at the number. Once they 4 cards have been dealt the spectator names the four other cards they are thinking of and sure enough they match up perfectly. I'd be really interested to hear people's thoughts on this, and point me in the direction of any similar routines if anyone knows of any. Any questions then let me know. Chris |

So as for them constructing the best possible hand given the card they chose, is the four cards something they merely think of, or do they tell you what they would be before they're revealed?
Sounds like a good routine. I love poker stuff. I assume it uses 208 decks (52 cards in a deck x 4 selections = 208 decks, which makes sense to me.)

Cheers John, if you'd like anymore info then just PM me.
The four other cards are merely thought of Mr Zuber, they are then named once the four cards have been dealt out. Your method guessing is getting better all the time sir. |

Have you had to deal with any spectators who weren't familiar with what the best poker hand would be? In other words, the cards they're thinking of didn't match the four revealed cards?
I'm pretty good with reverse engineering these things. It's a gift.

I've had a couple of people pick a four of a kind with an ace instead of a straight flush, its a little frustrating, but they've still been impressed, and obviously the four cards make an even better hand than they were thinking of.
Quite often people mention poker when I'm doing a gig and then I'll go into this, if I want to do it then I'll ask spectators if they play poker, if they seem hesitant at all then I won't perform it, as explaning poker takes the focus away from the effect itself. |

If it wasn't for the fact you said "The spectator shuffles the deck." then I can think of a very easy way of doing the rest...
it would be a nice pre-cursor to say, basil horwitz ten card poker presentation...
I've asked to be banned

Iain- the spectator shuffling is what really sells the effect to spectator. I haven't tried it without the shuffle but I'd imagine a spectator would probably work backwards through the trick and assume the cards were setup in a certain way. That's why I wanted the first thing to happen in the trick was for the deck to be shuffled.
I didn't mention this before but this can be performed FASDIU and or with a borrowed deck, no gaffs and a setup which can easily and naturally done on the fly. Not sure how or when I'll be releasing this, it might be as part of a larger ebook containing more of my card work or it might be a stand alone project. Might even do it as a video download, not sure yet. Thanks for all the great comments guys. Chris |

After careful consideration I've decided it'll probably be best for me to not release this effect as I fear that a large proportion of people would not be happy/comfortable with the handling..So for now I'll be keeping it to myself.
I will be bringing out a release soon containing my other card magic though. |

I was going to send you 500 quid for it but I guess I'll just burn it instead.

Well if they are picking 4 cards then 4 of a kind is the strongest hand. royal flush requires 5 cards the last time I played poker (last night)

They combine the card they've selected with 4 other thought of cards to make the strongest 5 card hand as stated in my original post.
